Chapter 37

1648 Words

Daniel chose a hotel bar on the other side of the city. Neutral ground, apparently. I suspected the real reason was that he did not want Arthur or Amelia knowing he was meeting me. I arrived ten minutes late deliberately. Daniel was already sitting in a quiet booth at the back when I walked in. He stood the moment he saw me. His eyes moved over my face. “You came.” “You said you had something to tell me.” I sat opposite him. Daniel remained standing for a second before sitting again. “You look different.” “I am different.” “I can see that.” There was something almost sad in his expression. Months ago, it would have affected me. Tonight, it didn’t. “What did Arthur promise you?” Daniel looked around the bar. “You came straight to the point.” “I didn’t come for a reunion.”
