"You think you're ready to be queen of this world? Let's see how long you survive."
The words followed me through the days that followed.
Alessandro had changed after that night in the drawing room. He was still cold, still calculating, still the Don who ruled with an iron fist. But there was something new in the way he looked at me. Something that felt almost like... expectation.
He was waiting for me to prove myself.
And I had no idea how.
The summons came on a Thursday morning.
Marco appeared at my door, his face as impassive as ever. "The Don requests your presence in the study, signorina. He has something to discuss with you."
I dressed quickly, choosing a simple black dress. I had learned that Alessandro preferred me in dark colors—they matched his world.
He was standing by the window when I entered, a glass of whiskey in his hand. He turned when he heard me, his eyes sweeping over me with approval.
"Good. You're learning."
"Learning what?"
"To dress for the role you're about to play."
I frowned. "What role?"
He walked toward me, stopping inches away. "There's a gathering tonight. The Five Families. They meet every month to discuss business, to make alliances, to remind each other of their power."
"What does that have to do with me?"
"You're coming with me."
My blood ran cold. "Alessandro, I can't—"
"You can. And you will." His voice was soft but implacable. "You're no longer just a bargaining chip, Livia. You're my companion. My consort. The woman at my side. The Families need to see that."
I shook my head. "I'm not ready for that."
"You're more ready than you think." He reached out and caught my chin, tilting my face up to meet his gaze. "You've survived me. You've survived the basement. You've survived your father. You're ready for anything."
"But what if I make a mistake? What if I say the wrong thing?"
He smiled, but there was no warmth in it. "Then you learn. And you never make the same mistake twice."
The dress arrived that afternoon.
Crimson silk, floor-length, with a plunging neckline that left little to the imagination. I stared at it, my heart pounding.
"This is what you want me to wear?"
Alessandro stood behind me, his eyes reflected in the mirror.
"You asked me to show you who I really am," he said softly. "Tonight, I'm showing you. This is my world, Livia. And you're about to become part of it."
The gathering was held at a private estate on the outskirts of the city.
The ballroom was vast, filled with crystal chandeliers and gold-leafed mirrors. Men in tailored suits stood in clusters, their voices low and conspiratorial. Women in diamonds and silk hung on their arms, their smiles sharp and predatory.
And at the center of it all stood Alessandro.
He moved through the crowd like a king surveying his kingdom, his presence commanding attention. Heads turned as he passed. Whispers followed in his wake.
"She's the one they're talking about..."
"The Virelli girl..."
"He's making a statement..."
I wanted to run. I wanted to hide. But Alessandro's hand was firm on the small of my back, guiding me forward.
"Smile," he murmured against my ear. "You're the most powerful woman in this room tonight."
"How can you say that?"
"Because you're on my arm." He paused. "That makes you untouchable."
The introductions were a blur.
Alessandro moved through the crowd, introducing me to Don after Don. Their eyes swept over me with cold assessment. Their wives smiled with frozen politeness.
"The Virelli girl," one of the wives whispered to another. "I heard she was offered to him as a—"
I turned, my smile fixed on my face. "As a guest," I said sweetly. "I'm a guest."
The woman's eyes widened. She hadn't expected me to respond.
"A guest," she repeated, her smile faltering. "Of course."
Alessandro appeared at my side, his hand possessively gripping my waist.
"Everything all right, tesoro?"
The endearment was a warning. A reminder. A statement to everyone watching.
I smiled up at him. "Perfectly."
Later, I found a moment to escape to the terrace.
The cool night air was a relief after the suffocating heat of the ballroom. I leaned against the railing, trying to slow my racing heart.
"Impressive performance."
I turned to find a woman standing in the shadows. She was older, elegant, with sharp eyes that missed nothing.
"Excuse me?"
"Your performance. The way you handled Cate Romano. She's been trying to claw her way into the inner circle for years, and you dismissed her with a single sentence."
I shrugged. "She deserved it."
The woman laughed. "I like you. That's dangerous."
"Why?"
She stepped forward, her eyes glinting. "Because in this world, being liked means you're a target. Everyone wants what you have."
"I don't have anything."
"Don't you?" She nodded toward the ballroom. "You have him. And in this world, that's everything."
She walked away, leaving me alone with her warning.
Alessandro found me on the terrace a few moments later.
"You handled that well," he said.
"What?"
"The confrontation. The wives. The whispers." He stood beside me, his eyes on the moonlit gardens. "You didn't crumble. You didn't run. You held your ground."
I turned to him, my heart pounding.
"Is that what you wanted? To test me?"
"Yes." He faced me, his eyes burning. "And you passed. You're stronger than you know, Livia. Stronger than you give yourself credit for."
I shook my head. "I was terrified."
"Terror doesn't make you weak. It makes you human. What matters is what you do with it."
"And what did I do?"
He reached out and tucked a strand of hair behind my ear.
"You turned terror into steel." He paused. "That's my queen."
