Uninvited Thoughts

923 Words
Anna dropped her bag on the small armchair by the door, kicked off her heels, and sighed with the kind of exhaustion that only came from emotional overload. It had been a day, and not just any kind of day—that kind of day. The kind you don’t see coming, yet somehow changes something inside you. After her shower, she wrapped herself in a robe and moved to the kitchen, spooning leftover lasagna onto a plate and microwaving it. She wasn’t really hungry, but she needed to chew, to do something—anything—that could take her mind off the man she couldn’t stop thinking about. Anthony. She didn’t know his name earlier, but now it had an identity. The man with the strong jawline, perfectly fitted designer suit, and the body that could make a sculptor cry in envy. Everything about him screamed power, control, and effortless confidence. And the way his suit had clung to his muscular frame… God. She bit her lower lip unconsciously. She chewed slowly as she stared at the muted TV. But even then, her thoughts drifted. She had seen men—good-looking ones, average ones, and everything in between. She had admired chiseled abs at the gym more times than she could count. But Anthony… he wasn’t just a man. He was the man. The kind who didn’t need to say a word to command a room. The kind who probably had women throwing themselves at him on a daily basis. And yet, he hadn’t even noticed her. It stung a little. She was used to being admired. Men usually lingered with their gazes, gave flirtatious smiles, tried to strike up conversations. Anthony didn’t even spare her a second look. He simply walked by like she was invisible. That was enough to drive her crazy. Feeling her body respond again to the heat of her imagination, Anna shook her head and stood. No way. She wasn’t going to let herself spiral into a lonely night of m**********n driven by a stranger’s face. She threw on a hoodie and jeans and headed out to her sister, Clara’s place, just ten minutes away. Her sister lived with her husband and three kids in a cozy family home that was always noisy and full of life—just what Anna needed. “Auntie Anna!” the kids screamed in excitement as soon as she walked in, piling onto her legs with sticky fingers and happy squeals. “Hey, my darlings!” she laughed, allowing herself to be smothered with affection. It was healing. She stayed a couple of hours, playing games, helping with dinner, and chatting with Clara. But when it got close to bedtime, she excused herself and headed home. She had work in the morning. Back in bed, the silence was heavy. Her body still buzzed with the memory of Anthony’s face, his presence, his aura. No amount of distraction could entirely erase him from her mind. She touched herself without guilt, moaning softly into her pillow as his image filled her imagination again. It was beyond physical; it was a pull. And it terrified her a little. The next morning at the office, she sat at her desk pretending to focus, but she was still adrift. Ashley, her closest colleague and office gist partner, walked by with a coffee mug and an amused look. “You still seem distracted,” Ashley said, leaning on Anna’s desk. “Still thinking about Mr. Tall, Dark, and Delicious?” Anna chuckled nervously. “Who was he? He came in yesterday and… I don’t know. He just—he didn’t look like anyone I’ve seen before.” Ashley’s eyes widened. “Wait. You don’t know?” Anna tilted her head. “Know what?” Ashley laughed. “Girl, that was Anthony Moretti.” Anna’s jaw dropped. “As in Moretti Global Anthony?” Ashley nodded dramatically. “CEO. Billionaire. God-like businessman. You name it. You’ve heard of the company, haven’t you?” “Of course!” Anna gasped. “But I’ve never seen his face before. I thought he was older, you know… less hot.” “Mm-hmm,” Ashley smirked. “That man is thirty-five, single, richer than sin, and as straight-faced as they come. I’ve been working here five years and seen him twice. He doesn’t come around much.” Anna leaned back in her chair, stunned. “Wow… I actually thought he might be—” she hesitated. “What? Gay?” Ashley asked bluntly. “Well, yeah,” Anna admitted. “I mean, I’ve never been ignored like that before.” Ashley laughed. “Honey, if Anthony noticed you, you’d know. But don’t flatter yourself too much. That man doesn’t even look twice at Victoria’s Secret models. He’s like… married to his job.” Anna sighed, feigning indifference. “So he’s not married?” “Nope. And his mum’s apparently losing her mind trying to get him hitched. Poor woman,” Ashley added with a playful eye-roll. Anna bit her lip again. Somehow, knowing who he was made him even more unreachable. Yet her curiosity had only grown. A part of her wanted to understand why a man like Anthony seemed so… detached. Unbothered. And how it was possible that a man like that hadn’t fallen in love—or even in lust. She sipped her coffee and tried to shake the thought, but deep down, she knew: he had carved a space in her mind she couldn’t fill with anything else. Not yet.
