Chapter 13

For days no one ever heard something from Azul. No one knows that she went to the adjacent town, no one knows that she went in the hospital and rested there for a couple of days— no one knows, aside from her doctor and Lyle. Lyle has been with her in those days not until when he has to comeback due to work. But they talked a lot, have entirely reconciled and even made plans when they’d see each other again.

“She isn’t really answering my calls, but she did sent me a message saying that I don’t have to worry about her.” Piper said to Klay “But that was the day after she left and I did not receive anymore message from her”

After Azul left, Klay frequently went to Consuelo’s bookshop to talk with Piper about Azul. He was fortunate that Consuelo left to have a vacation for weeks and no one would intervene questioning him about the things that is happening. Piper on the other hand is cooperating with him and doesn’t really finding him weird or suspicious.

“Why do you really seem so concerned about it? I mean you really bother to get here every night just to get updated about Azul.” Piper told him, she has long been holding the urge to bring that up.

“I am the last person she was with, and possibly the last person she confabulated. We went to places that has a surveillance cameras including the university, and the footages. If Azul did get into a danger I might also get into one as those footages are all capable of reinforcing something.” he explained not really sounding defensive. “That’s the biggest factor here.”

“So you aren’t really concerned about her?”

“I am” he admitted “That’s also one of the factor. I am worried about her that is why I keep myself updated, I am afraid that something happened to her. I am as well concerned with myself as if there is really something that happened to her. But I hope there’s none.”

“I really hope so...” Piper could only reply. His reasons are valid and there seems nothing to doubt or to question about Klay’s agenda. He doesn’t seem suspicious, also as what she heard from Consuelo or anyone who knows Klay, as well her own experience while she was with him for some time— she could not deny that he is a good guy.

That night, when Piper came back to the dorm at 9 in the evening her shift she found her— in their dorm, in her bed— lying peacefully while staring at the ceiling.

“Azul!” Piper exclaimed, Azul jolted up looking at the doorway where Piper was standing, and she smiled at her genuinely.

“Oh hey Pipes!” She greeting still keeping that sweet genuine smile.

Piper’s shoulders was dropped as she approached her “Where have you been?!”

“Just elsewhere.”she thriftily replied.

“We’re so worried about you, you know that?”

“I am so sorry— I haven’t had access with my phone the past days as— well I misplaced it, i just found it recently and is even drained—“ she darted her gaze at her phone in the side table, which is currently charging.

“I see” Piper frowned and walked to her bed and sat on the corners of it “Did you get to meet your brother?”

“No, I was suppose to but he changed plans” she lied “I just met with my old friend who was living in the same town and we hang out for some time. We haven’t seen each other for 5 years almost 6 actually, there’s a lot to catch up with each other.” Yet that one is somewhat true.

“Is that so?” Azul nodded her head “Is he the one who picked you up here in the university?”

“How did you know about that?”

“Well— we checked the cameras in the gates of the university and a car went in and out, the guard told us that he was to pick you up and you also talked to the guard when—“

Azul sat erect and cuts her off “Why would you do that?”

Piper jolted and defensively said “No! No! It’s not like what you think, I just did that because I was worried— only if not—“ she decided to pause from talking as she realized how hasty she talks and how defensive she sounds like. She sighed and bit her lower lip before resuming, Azul gave her time to manage and array what she was to say “Well there’s this guy who came here, asking for you— his name is Klay Nepomuceno. He said you are with him the night before and that he dropped you by in the university gates that day, and I told him that you did not really arrived here in our dorm that’s why we got worried.”

“I told you I might not be coming back—“

“That’s isn’t quite reassuring, reckoning the fact that you sent the message the night before.” she pursued “We were just worried, he was also the one who brought me in the guardhouse and showed me the footage.”

Azul sighed, her reason is fathomable that there’s no reason for her to even get upset for seeming that she was being kind of intrusive. “I understand, I am so sorry Piper.”

“You don’t have to, you did told me about it— it just happens that I’m so cynical” Piper pouted “But how did you and that Klay actually met?” she looked at her with her curious eyes but Azul darted her a nonchalant gazes “Oh sorry— I don’t meant to be intrusive, I am just wondering. You know he was so worried about you when he learned that you did not get back here in the dorm. He also asked me to update him if you happen to come back. A-and—“ she was hesitant to tell her something more but she ended up doing so, thinking that it’d be no good if she’d keep it and it’s not that big deal either “I g-gave h-him your number.”

“So he’s the one who kept calling on my phone that it got drained!”

“I also did rang your phone for numerous times.”

“I am so sorry for making you worry, Piper. I shouldn’t have left that way, I didn’t think it would be much suspicious. Also I should have told Klay when we were together that night.” she thought about it as her mistake for not telling them that she is leaving, whereas— even she herself did not expected she’d be going away either. That is just so unplanned.

“You should have!” Azul reenforced “Would you mind updating Klay that you arrived here already? I mean I think it would be better if you are the one to inform him that you are okay.”

“I’d certainly do that” Azul said and glanced at her phone. “I must.”
