Anna stopped her car at the arrivals section of the airport. She was there to pick up her husband.
Yes, David Byrne. He just got back from New York.
No. It should have gone because his home also his major company were in New York. He went to Los Angeles to meet her.
"Hi, sorry I keep you waiting," she said after stopping the car and rolling down the window. Dave had been standing outside after she had made him wait for half an hour. It was her job. She had to deal with an advertising offer for Kate, which lasted longer than she thought.
Dave slightly nodded and gave a smile. "It's okay, Ann. I shouldn't have asked you to pick me up when you were busy."
Anna opened her mouth, about to spit out her rebuttal when he said again.
"Can you open the trunk?"
She then remembered the 18-inch suitcase beside him. She had intended to open the truck before lowering the window. But she forgot.
After Dave put down his luggage and sat next to her, she drove the car out of the airport. It was pretty cold in March.
"Are you sure you want to sleep in my apartment?" she asked without taking her focus off the street. It was the weekend, so it was crowded and jammed at some points.
"You said you will accept me?" Dave asked her back. In fact, they had discussed it the night before. He wanted to know how she lived, so the request came in a quick chat before bedtime. And he had made sure Anna agreed to that.
"I thought you changed your mind," she mumbled in a pretty loud voice.
"No, Ann. I want to know your life, too."
So, that was how Anna brought Dave to her apartment. If last time he only saw the outside, this time he went inside.
"Sorry, it's not as big as your room," she said after they entered the apartment. She purposely cleaned it. She even had finished the laundry she usually did after returning home.
"Don't say that. It's a nice place." There was displeasure in his tone. "You decorated this well," he complimented as he looked around.
Actually, judging in every way, what she said was true. The apartment was not as large as the suite room he used at the hotel. It might only reach half of it.
However, what he said was also true. Anna took good care of it. It was clean and tidy. And the choice of white and beige colors made the room spacious and comfortable.
Anna loved the simplicity.
His gaze stopped on the bed and then the only sofa there. "I'll sleep on the couch." He decided without asking.
The drawback of the apartment was that all rooms were combined, except the bathroom. So, they would share a room, any choice they chose.
Anna nodded in agreement. She walked into the kitchen and said, "I'll warm the pizza. You can change to something more comfortable."
Yes, they stopped by to buy pizza for dinner. And it seemed perfect to accompany the night together. Oh, don't overthink that. It was just a night together as friends, nothing more.
"What's this?" he asked Anna when she came out of the bathroom after changing clothes. It referred to the bundles on the table.
"It's scenarios," she answered simply. She glanced quickly at the table and saw that there was only pizza. So, she returned to the kitchen, took a bottle of orange juice and two glasses, and brought them to the living room.
"Are you interested in the audition?"
Instantly, her brows furrowed. It reminded her of a similar question. "Why do you ask the same question as Chelsy?" She put the glass down on the table and plopped down beside him.
"You met Chelsy?" Dave asked back.
"Yeah. I accompanied my talent to audition. I didn't know it was part of Byrne Corp."
"We have many subsidiaries. One of them is a movie company. And it's run by Chelsy's family."
Anna nodded in understanding. She had heard that from Chelsy, so it didn't surprise her anymore. Only, it gave off a strange feeling, imagining her having a relationship with such a big company.
"Chelsy can help you land the role."
Somehow it also felt like deja vu. It was like Chelsy said it, but actually, it was not. "For my talent?"
"Sure. You said you weren't interested in the audition. But if you want to try that, you-"
"No, thanks," she cut in quickly. She had panicked speaking in front of many people, especially while acting. And the recording of her school drama during middle school was enough proof that she was unsuitable for acting. Her expression was ugly. "But for my talent, I don't think it's good. I mean, I shouldn't ask for it."
"Why? Your talent might be desperate for the role."
That was right. Kate needed it, or she could break the peace with her boring chatter if she didn't have a job. And Anna must not forget her troublesome request.
Wait. Which one was the worst? Working with her while she was jobless or conversely?
But, it looked the same. Kate would be troublesome everywhere.
"But I want it based on their decision. Even if Chelsy accepted her because of me, at least I never asked for that outright." She tried to explain what she meant. Not that she didn't appreciate the help. She needed connection in this world, anyway. Still, she felt awkward asking that, especially to Dave. She was afraid that he would think she was taking advantage of him.
"So you're that type," he muttered.
"What?"
He gave a shake. "Nothing." Then he tidied up the bundle. "How about the screenplay? You said you wanted to be a screenwriter, right?"
Her eyes widened in surprise. "I said that?"
"Yes, on the night we first met. You said you studied writing at university because you wanted to be a screenwriter." He summarized the events over a week ago.
Anna tilted her head slightly and tried to remember. Her memories were a little blurry because the conversation was very comfortable, and her situation at that time was heartbreaking. She might pick up on the mood and tell him that. "I think I did that," She said in the middle of doubt and confidence.
"Yes. You told me that. I even offered to send your work to me."
Anna was taken aback. "Really?" She really couldn't remember that part.
"I'm sad you forgot about our meeting so quickly."
"I'm sorry. Too many surprising things happened those days."
Dave smiled knowingly. Besides, he didn't take it seriously. "I'm kidding. But my offer isn't a joke. You could try sending it to Chelsy or me."
Anna paused to think about it. If she did, she would violate her principles.
But it was the best offer for beginners like her. Even if she failed, at least the manuscript was really assessed instead of being returned only with a refusal.
"Try it, Ann. Use your rich husband to make him feel useful to you."
Anna burst into a laugh at hearing that. His words didn't match with how he pleaded to her. "Okay. I'll think about it."
