His hand settled on my waist, and suddenly we were moving, and I couldn’t hold it in anymore.
“You knew,” I said, my voice shaking. “You all knew they were going to announce this tonight.”
“Yes.”
“And you didn’t tell me?”
“What would you have done if we had?” His voice was quiet. “Stopped it? Claimed the bond publicly? Ruined your mother’s happiness and destroyed our father?”
“I would have…” I stopped, because I didn’t know what I would have done.
“Exactly.” His hand tightened on my waist.
“This was always going to happen, Selina. The council’s been pushing for matches since we turned eighteen. We’ve held them off for two years. But now…”
