Vanessa’s POV I stood by the window in Rowan’s office, staring out at the manicured gardens without really seeing them. My hands were shaking. I clasped them together to make it stop. Behind me, I heard Rowan dismiss the boys. The door closed with a soft click, leaving us alone in heavy silence. “Vanessa.” His voice was gentle. Too gentle. Like he was approaching a wounded animal.
