Alexander Grant listened to her words with a thoughtful expression, narrowing his eyes as he scrutinized her. His unfathomable gaze made it impossible to guess what he was thinking. After a moment, he raised an eyebrow and pointed to the elevator buttons. “Going up?”
The supervisor, who had lost all composure, stood in the corner of the elevator speculating about the relationship between the two. Could it be that Emily White and the new CEO knew each other? Given the way Mr. Grant was speaking, there seemed to be no hint of reprimand. He regretted nearly making a mistake earlier.
“Mr. Grant, I’ll take the employee elevator next to this one. I apologize for my earlier distraction; I wasn’t paying attention to the elevators.” Emily bowed slightly to Alexander Grant and wisely chose to take the adjacent elevator.
She was a smart woman who had joined EC right after college. She understood the first rule of surviving in the company: stay low-key. Considering the complexity of her relationship with Samantha Lee and the potential fallout from Alexander Grant’s presence, she decided not to have any unnecessary interactions with the people from the Grant family.
Out of sight, out of mind, she thought. Perhaps she should consider changing jobs. She had joined EC through Samantha’s connections. As the daughter of the chairman, Samantha had easily helped her get in. However, Emily was well aware that she had climbed up the ranks on her own merits. But now, she wondered if she should start looking for another job, at least until things settled down.
As soon as she sat down at her desk, her manager called. “Emily, why are you late? Hurry up and prepare the report. The new CEO is here and wants to see the performance report for the first half of the quarter at two o’clock.”
Emily was taken aback. “Manager, as I mentioned before, the report isn’t ready yet because there are some issues with last month’s figures. It won’t be done until tomorrow.”
She checked her watch; it was already 1:30 PM. She only had half an hour left.
The manager was insistent. “I don’t care. You have to finish it by two o’clock. This isn’t my order; it’s the CEO’s. You know how he operates.”
“Manager, can’t you just explain this to him? Just one more day…”
“No, I can’t. You know what he hates the most inefficient employees. I don’t want to retire early, so get it done by two o’clock!”
Emily tried to argue further, but the manager hung up on her. Frustrated, she stared at the phone, feeling like everything was going wrong lately. Her love life was in shambles, and now her career was also in jeopardy.
Originally, this time was the lunch break, so the hallway was quiet. The sunlight passed through the cobalt-blue glass and fell on the floor, bright but not scorching. However, the mood of walking on the warm floor was not beautiful.
Salesperson Li, who makes reports, has some grudges against her, specifically for reasons that even she herself is not very clear about. Perhaps it was because there were rumors in the company that the position of General Manager's Secretary was intended for her, but in the end, it was taken by Emily, so there has always been a resentment.
This time, when she heard that Emily was going to get married next month and stop working, she has been delaying the sales report indefinitely. Emily is well aware that Li is just trying to make things difficult for her.
"Li." Emily approached her with a collected demeanor, trying to appear as amicable as possible. She knocked on the desk and politely asked, "Could you please hurry up and finish the previous report? I need it for the meeting."
Li looked up and sarcastically responded, making no effort to conceal her disdain for Emily, "Wow, what wind is blowing today? Ms. White Secretary, is the report really that urgent?"
Emily knew she would face resistance but remained unfazed, "Yes, it's very urgent. Li, please help me out. Can you have it done by two o'clock?"
"I really can't help you, Ms. White. I've already told you that I can only give it to you tomorrow," Li replied, pointing to the piles of documents on her desk. "If I could spare even a little time, I would definitely help you, but you can see how busy I am."
Emily took a deep breath and tried again, "Li, the new president has arrived, and he needs to see your report right now."
"Oh, I see, the new president is here..." Li pretended to be surprised but still seemed reluctant. "Well, since you put it that way, Ms. White, I'll help you out. I'll send you the data for the report, and you can do it yourself. I'm really busy with many files to process, and you know, I'm leaving soon, so there's a lot of handover work to do."
It was a simple task of inputting data and printing the report, which Li could have finished in half an hour if she were willing to help. But since she refused, Emily decided not to press further, as she had experience making reports herself. She thanked Li and left, unaware of the cunning glint in Li's eyes.
"Emily White, you took my secretary position without warning, and now you've come to me on your own. Don't blame me for being heartless!"
Half an hour later, Emily finished preparing the report and headed to the conference room.
