Emily White stood nervously in front of Alexander Grant's office door. She couldn't understand what he was thinking because she had challenged his authority. Was he planning to fire her? But wouldn't it be simpler to just say so in the meeting room instead of calling her into his office? She couldn't fathom the mind of this mysterious man. But, she reminded herself, she had nothing to lose. If she was going to be fired, she'd face it head-on. She took a deep breath and knocked on the door. A low, male voice responded, "Come in." When she saw Alexander Grant, she felt even more nervous. She closed the door behind her and tried to calm herself. Alexander Grant had some resemblance to his sister, Samantha Lee, but he was even more impressive. His demeanor exuded a regal aura that made others feel inferior. He gestured for her to sit on the sofa, and after he sat down, she followed suit. "Miss White, do you know why I called you here?" he asked. "I'm not sure, Mr. Grant," she replied. "If you have something to say, please go ahead. I know I spoke out of line in the meeting room, but I stand by what I said." Alexander Grant interrupted her, his tone sharp, "So, you're not as confident now as you were then? Are you only brave when it comes to speaking your mind?" Emily felt a surge of pride and looked up at him, "I still believe in what I said. I'm not backing down." "Then why are you nervous?" he asked. Emily tried to explain that her nervousness stemmed from not knowing his intentions, not from guilt. Alexander Grant smiled, his voice softening, "Who said I was angry before?" Emily White never expected the situation to turn around completely and was surprised to see Alexander Grant's expression become gentle. "Isn't your expression like that because you hope I get angry?" Emily quickly waved her hands, "No, Mr. Grant, it's just that I never thought my words would not make you angry." Alexander Grant, with his eyes half-closed, his long fingers intertwined and placed on his legs, leaning comfortably back on the leather sofa, showing a somewhat careless attitude, "I like people who speak the truth, and in work, I value real ability. There are too many people who flatter me, but you were able to say what you did today, so I know you're not a woman who can advance just by talking." His words greatly boosted Emily's confidence. She hadn't expected Alexander Grant, the arrogant heir to EC, to evaluate her from such a perspective. She felt happy, although she didn't admit it, and she tightened her fingers, took a deep breath, and said, "Thank you for your understanding, Mr. Grant. I was also impulsive in my speech, and actually, I..." "Actually, I need a secretary now that I've just come to EC, so I'd like you to be my personal secretary. What do you think?" Emily was shocked by his words and stood up awkwardly. "Mr. Grant, you just said... let me be your secretary?" She asked again to confirm. Alexander Grant continued to lean on the sofa, smiling more relaxed now. Emily noticed that when he smiled, there was a faint dimple on his right cheek, reminding her of another beautiful face that also had dimples when smiling. However, Alexander's dimples were much shallower than Samantha Lee's. He smiled lightly, as if a fleeting gust of wind on the sea surface, disappearing in an instant, leaving her doubting her own eyes. "You didn't hear wrong; I want you to be my secretary." He raised an eyebrow, "You don't want to?" Emily hesitated for a moment, considering carefully before saying, "Mr. Grant, thank you for your appreciation. I never expected such luck today. I came in with a resolve to face death, but now the situation has turned around. Since you personally offered this to me, I have the right to choose. I... am unwilling." Alexander Grant narrowed his eyes, seemingly examining her, but there was no surprise in his deep gaze, as if her refusal was expected, even bringing a hint of satisfaction. Finally, he asked, "Why are you unwilling?" Emily smiled bitterly in her heart. She wasn't worried about her ability to handle the position; it was because she didn't want to get too close to the Grant family. Alexander Grant was Samantha Lee's older brother, known for his indulgence towards her. Given her delicate relationship with Samantha Lee, she didn't want to further complicate things.
