Adelia POV
The only times I ever felt my heart beat so fast and the world spin were when my mom died and when Damien closed the door behind him that day. Things didn’t really get to me, and I tried to calm my responses to things. Most times, I’m successful, but right now, I don’t know how to respond to this.
The way he said it, it was like he really didn’t care how I felt about it. At least he cared enough to let me know not to waste my time trying to make our relationship blossom.
“I feel nothing."
“Contract marriage”....
His words kept ringing in my head, and for some reason, I didn’t want them to mean what I knew they meant. He was probably joking; I mean, it wasn’t possible for him not to like me. He saved me and beat up Damien; he came to see me every day and always made sure that I was okay.
Why didn’t I see that he didn’t like me then? Or was I so caught up in my own world that I didn’t realise it? I had really thought he was going to be the one to rescue me from this sad life and make me feel better, but I guess I was wrong.
What was I thinking? My first mate hated me and beat me to pulp, and just because the second one helped me out of that situation, it didn’t mean he’d like me either.
Maybe it was my fault; maybe I was being too fast and I scared him.
“Did I say or do anything wrong? Is it me? I can apologise if I offended you.”
He sighed and cast me a quick glance before turning back to the road.
“No, it’s not you, it’s me.” The classic line, “Trust me, you’d make a great Luna, but I’m really not interested in anyone, but I guess the fact that I accepted you says something." Cheer up; it’s not like I’m rejecting you; I won’t.”
At this point,I didn’t know if I preferred if he rejected me straight out or this, but I guess I should be thankful that he still wanted me to be his Luna. At least, I won’t be embarrassed and cast aside as a rogue.
“We can still be friends. No one has to know.”
He said it as if it were a good thing. To say that I was heartbroken was an understatement because I had really high hopes and expectations when it came to him because he really proved himself to me and my dad.
My dad really liked him, and he gave me his blessings. He laid emphasis on being a very good wife and leader to my pack, as being a Luna wasn’t an easy job.
Joseph was an Alpha, and I knew that his pack was very important to him, so if I was going to win his heart, I was going to have to be beneficial to him when it came to my duties. That was one away, and I knew how to get to him.
The car slowly came to a halt, and I was pulled from my thoughts when he slammed the door on his way out. I took in my surroundings and realised that we were in a compound—most definitely his house. I would have been ecstatic to be here and meet his pack, but I couldn’t get my mind off what he had said.
The fact that I knew that I had the opportunity to reject him now that we hadn’t mated or he hadn’t marked me yet, but I didn’t want to, baffled me.
“You coming or what?” He turned around to ask me.
Gathering every ounce of courage I could muster, I walked out of the car and tried to keep my head high. Luna was always strong, and I wasn’t going to get anywhere if I let little things get to me, especially when they came from him.
He led the way as we walked in. The house was really warm, and the smell of freshly baked cake filled the house. There were not really many things to look at, maybe because he was still a bachelor. The house looked so empty.
White couches circled the living room and took up most of its space. The TV looked like it had not been touched for a while, and a pile of books sat proudly on a stool beside the love couch. The house seemed desolate, but it was very clean. Too clean.
“Jossy!” A high-pitched voice rang through the house, and I saw a lady come out of the kitchen and fall into Jospeh’s arms. He hugged her back, her strawberry-blonde hair stopping just above her a*s.
“How’re you, Violet? Here is Adelia, my mate. Adelia, meet Violet, my friend.”
I stretched out a smile and extended my hand. She gripped it so tight, it made me wince.
“His best friend. I’m sure you’ve heard a lot about me. I can’t say the same for you, though.”
If Joseph heard what she said, he didn’t say anything, nor did he react. Instead, he woke up to answer a phone call.
The pain I felt when Violet squeezed my hand brought me back to my senses, and I frowned before forcefully dragging my hand from her grip.
“Listen up, goldigger. I don’t know who you think you are or how much you paid that witch to confuse Joseph into thinking that you’re his mate, but I assure you that I won’t let you win. I am his mate; he’s known me for ages, and he was about to propose to me before you came into his life. He doesn't even think I’m going to let you win. I’ll make your life hell.”
My mouth went dry. Why did everyone at this pack hate me when they barely even knew me, and what was this about me stealing him from her? If they were truly together, then he would have married her instead of coming in search of me.
“What’s going on? Are you guys getting to know each other?” Joseph came back just then.
Violet let out a sigh, and I saw her face fall.
“I guess I came off too strong. I’ve been speaking to her, but she wasn’t responding.”
I frowned. “That’s not true. You said-“
“There’s no need to be rude, Adelia. Violet is just a friend. She’s like family.” He pulled her closer by the waist, and I watched her smirk rise.
There was no use saying anything. It was obvious he had a soft spot for her.
‘”Jossy, I spent all day in the kitchen baking a cake for you; come taste it.” She dragged him away, and neither of them looked back for once, and they left me standing in the living room, confused, hurt, and wondering if I was making a mistake.
A tear finally rolled down one of my cheeks.
