A New Life

My Situation

It’s 5AM, I’m sitting at my kitchen table where I’ve been requested to stay. I look around at my home which has become so strange to me. I am confined to this chair in my home that has been turned upside down like some alternate universe. Police are walking in and out taking evidence and surveying everything.

 I start to cry, “What am I going to do?” 

Then I hear “Sophia, I’m Detective Tiner I’d like to ask you some questions if you’re up for it.” 

I wipe my tears and reply “OK”. Detective Tiner pulls out a chair, she smiles at me and says “Now I need to ask you some questions but before we start do you need anything?” 

I replied, “No.” 

She starts “ I need you to walk me through what happened tonight.” 

So I tell her everything from my mom making chicken tacos for dinner and my parents wanting me to watch a movie with them, and how I declined because I wanted to be alone and went to listen to music in the backyard on the hammock. I told her every step I took all the way to finding my parents and then I pictured it the last way I saw them. Lying there dead, I started to cry again. 

“Why would someone do this to them?” I asked. “They are the most amazing people you could ever hope to know!”

 Tiner frowned and put her hand on mine and said “I’m going to find out who did this to your parents. I have everything I need from you but if anything comes to mind give me a call.” She hands me a business card. 

“What am I supposed to do now?”

 Tiner asks “Do you have any family you can call?” I replied, “No, I have no one.” 

As I sit there thinking about what I can do, another woman walks up to me. “Sophia, I’m Sarah and I’m with social services. I’m here to place you somewhere for the night until we can figure out your situation.” 

I looked at her appalled, “My situation?” 

She responded, “Yes, until we have some type of legal direction either from a will or the state we need to make sure you are taken care of being that you’re a minor.”
