Once the house was rented, events seemed to move rapidly. Esther gave the rooms only a cursory look before she had to return to Diani. She didn’t disagree about Harry’s choice, and she admitted she could take perverse joy taking over a residence formerly occupied by the Red Strangers, which was slang back in the day for white settlers, presumably because their faces in this climate were always flushed with sunburn.
