The van Joseph rented was a Toyota Nomad, which had ample room for passengers and cargo space. He explained that it wasn’t a safari vehicle — which would have to be a true four-by-four — but he’d chosen comfort over ruggedness, and he explained that tourist cars weren’t permitted to go off-track in the bush. The weather recently had been hot and dry, but extra caution would have been in order during rainy season when getting stuck in the mud far from base camp would be more than just a minor annoyance.
