The incident of the cheetahs and the wildebeests gave Harry an insight on the justification offered by the politician, “It is our turn to feed.” He knew that Kenyans would understand, as perhaps others might not, that their leader was citing the laws of nature, not the morality of humans. There can be nothing evil in the cheetah’s need to sustain itself. Nor could the mother’s painful dilemma be avoided.
What is needed is necessary, the politician seemed to say.
The citizens could understand, but they might not forgive.
What brought all this up for Harry was the nagging question of whether Skebelsky’s scheme was right or wrong. Right or wrong for the community? Right or wrong for the disadvantaged people they intended to serve? Right or wrong for Harry Gardner?
