The club was predictably dark and smoky. Harry was relieved that the American rock coverage coming through the audio system wasn’t too loud. He expected it was early in the evening for clubbing, but there was a fair-sized crowd, mostly men in suit and tie, some in running togs with team shirts and ball caps worn backward. Attractive women, all in evening dress, sat with groups of men at some of the tables. Other men sat in pairs and seemed to be conversing intently. No sooner had the bouncer-host showed them to a private table than Aldo jumped back up, saying, “Order me a brandy and soda. I gotta see a man about a rug.” Harry assumed his friend was off to the restroom, but when Aldo had been gone ten minutes, he began to suspect he was off on another errand.
