Diani Beach Road, the two-lane tarmac through town, extends southward to the border with Tanzania, a distance of about thirty miles. On the way, after about four miles is the village of Galu, where the beach is pristine, and new real-estate developments proceed by fits and starts. Construction on a shopping mall, two condominium complexes, and a luxury hotel had halted when bank funds dried up because of the most recent economic downturn. Farther on is Mzambweni, a larger town and home to one of the area’s major hospitals.
After the threesome had finished breakfast at the Kusi Lodge, Joseph was waiting for them in a private sedan in the circular drive of the hotel. Joseph’s pride was his reconditioned and only slightly battered white Toyota Camry. It had right-hand drive suite
