The pandemic outbreak had been rolling through the world, including Kenya, into the early spring. The hotels should have been announcing their reopening dates. But this year, everyone who cared knew the foreign tourists wouldn’t be coming anyway. So the mood of the town was depressed as usual, and now people were worried about getting sick. Nicole had reported to Harry that young people in Santa Monica often went around with no masks, and it was only the seniors who were faithful about it. And the same seemed to be true here at the beach. The mzungus, who were typically older, wore their masks, indoors and out. The expats wouldn’t venture into a shop and sent members of their staff out with their lists of groceries and supplies, as they had done most of the time anyway.
