The Warning

Isabella barely slept that night. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw him. Damian. The way he said her name, the way he held her wrist like he already owned her. His presence clung to her like smoke, refusing to leave. By morning, she convinced herself it had been nothing more than a scare. He was a dangerous man, yes, but he had walked away. Maybe he would forget her. Maybe she could go back to her normal life. But normal ended the moment she stepped outside. Parked across the street from her apartment was the same black car. Its windows were tinted, its engine silent, but she felt the weight of eyes on her. Her chest tightened. He had not forgotten. She gripped her bag tighter and started walking, ignoring the pressure building inside her. The car pulled away from the curb slowly, trailing behind her. She quickened her pace. Halfway to work, the car eased ahead of her and stopped. The door opened. Damian stepped out, immaculate in another dark suit. People on the street glanced their way, but quickly turned their eyes. They knew better. Isabella froze. Damian’s gaze swept over her calmly, like a man who was always in control. “You should get in.” “No,” she shot back, forcing steel into her voice. “I told you I don’t want anything to do with you.” A faint smile curved his lips. “And yet here I am.” Her heart pounded, but she refused to let him see fear. “Why are you following me?” “Because you need to understand something.” His voice was low, almost gentle, but his eyes left no room for argument. “My world is not kind. Men who cross me look for weaknesses. Last night, they saw me with you. That makes you a target.” Isabella stiffened. “I never asked to be part of your world.” “No one asks.” He stepped closer, lowering his voice. “You’ve already been noticed. If anyone comes for you, it won’t be with flowers. It will be with bullets.” A cold shiver ran down her spine. She wanted to dismiss his words as manipulation, but the certainty in his tone made it impossible. “Then stay away from me,” she snapped. “If they don’t see us together, I’ll be fine.” Damian chuckled softly, shaking his head. “It’s too late. They’ve seen enough. The only way you’ll be safe is with me.” Her throat tightened. She hated how final his words sounded, as if the decision was no longer hers. “You don’t own me.” He leaned in, his gaze dark and steady. “Not yet.” Her stomach dropped at the quiet promise in his tone. The silence stretched between them until Damian stepped back. He gestured to the waiting car. “Get in, Isabella. For your own good.” She glared at him, her nails digging into her palms. Every instinct screamed to resist, to prove she wasn’t some fragile woman who could be dragged into his world. But deep down, a voice whispered the terrifying truth, he might be the only shield she had. Her lips parted, ready to refuse again, when Damian’s phone rang. He answered without looking away from her. His expression shifted, his jaw tightening. “Keep her in sight,” he ordered before hanging up. Without another word, he slipped back into the car, leaving her trembling on the sidewalk. The vehicle pulled away, but she knew it wouldn’t go far. Her heart raced as she continued walking. He had delivered his warning. And now, whether she wanted it or not, she was part of his world.
