Mira stood in the quiet of the restaurant’s opulent restroom, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. The red wine stain on her dress was forgotten. She gripped her phone, her thumb hovering over Rose’s contact name.
She felt sick. She had seen it with her own eyes—Kelvin, the man who was supposed to be celebrating seven years of loyalty, looking at Becky with a tenderness that made Mira’s skin crawl.
She pressed the call button and paced the small, tiled room.
Pick up, Rose. Please, just pick up. Mira said. Looking worried.
On the third ring, Rose’s voice came through, sounding warm and tired.
"Hey, bestie! "Mira said.
You’re still at the dinner? I was just about to cut the cake. I thought you’d be home by now."Rose said.
Mira closed her eyes, the sound of the restaurant’s soft jazz music leaking through the door behind her, contrasting sharply with the news she had to deliver.
"Rose… listen to me. I need you to stay calm, okay?" She said.
There was a pause. The joy drained out of Rose’s voice instantly.
"Mira? You’re scaring me. What’s wrong?"Rose replied.
"I’m at the restaurant… the new one," Mira started, her voice shaking with anger. "And I… Rose, I just saw Kelvin."
"Kelvin?" Rose’s voice hitched. "But he said he was working late. He said he had an emergency client meeting."
"He lied," Mira said, the words sharp and final. She lowered her voice, becoming intensely protective.
"He’s sitting at a table in the main dining hall right now, Rose. He’s with Becky. And they aren't 'just friends,' Rose. They’re laughing, they’re drinking… he’s holding her hand. He’s looking at her the way he’s supposed to be looking at you on your anniversary."
The silence on the other end was absolute. It was the silence of a heart breaking in real-time.
"Are you sure?" Rose whispered, her voice barely audible. "Maybe… maybe it’s a misunderstanding?"
"I’m looking at them right now,"
Mira snapped, though her heart ached for her friend. "I have pictures, Rose. I have a video. I’m sending them to you right now. Get your things together. You don't deserve this. Do you hear me? You do not deserve this."
"I... I see,"Rose said. Her voice sounded hollow, like she was retreating into a shell.
"Rose? Rose, talk to me."Mira said.
"I’m fine, Mira,"Rose said, but she didn't sound fine. She sounded brittle.
"I just… I need to see the photos. Send them."
Beep. The line went dead. Mira stared at her phone screen, her eyes blurring with tears. She quickly tapped on the screen, sending the file, knowing that once Rose opened it, the life she had spent seven years building would be gone forever.
The Scene Elsewhere: The "A-Rose" Restaurant
In the private dining room, Alexander sat perfectly still. He didn't need to hear the conversation to know it had happened. He checked his phone. His private feed showed the exact moment Mira had walked out of the restroom, her face a mask of fury, and he knew the call had been made.
He took a slow, deliberate sip of his wine, his eyes fixed on the empty chair where Kelvin should have been sitting if he were a better man.
It’s starting, he thought.
He didn't look at his father. He didn't look at Anna. He looked at the reflection in the glass of his wine glass, his expression one of calm, terrifying triumph. Rose would be hurting now, lost, and betrayed. And the moment she realized she had nothing left… that was when he would step into the light.
