After leaving the coffee shop, Ryder headed for his Cadillac parked in the driveway. David called after him, “You are not coming with us?” “No, I have another business to take care of. But I shall keep my phone on.” Once Ryder had driven off, Vanessa and David got back into their car. “So, where are we going?” David asked. “To an old friend who owes me a favor. She knows how to summon demons,” saying that, Vanessa switched gears and pulled out of the driveway. It was unusually cold that night, despite it being only October. They could feel the cold seep into their skin as their freezing breaths fogged up the windshield. There was the usual traffic on the streets of Brooklyn but the neon lights had dimmed.
