CHAPTER 2 I Was Never Meant to Live Aria’s POV “Run.” My wolf’s voice hit me again. “Your life was the price all along.” My breath broke, I didn’t think and I didn’t look back, I just ran. My hand pushed the door open and I rushed out, the night air hit my face, but I felt nothing, my chest rose fast and my legs moved on their own. “Run run run”. I heard footsteps behind me. “Stop her!” My heart jumped. “They said once she leaves!” “I know! Move!” They were coming, not to bring me back but to end me. Tears blurred my eyes as I ran down the steps, past the courtyard, and past the guards who pretended not to see me. No one stopped me and no one helped me, so this was it, this was how it ended. I then bit my lip and ran faster. My legs hurt, but I kept going, the gate was ahead. If I cross it… If I leave the pack land…Would I live? Or will I still die? “Don’t let her cross!” someone shouted and my breath shook and then I pushed harder, just a little more, just a little… and I crossed the line and everything changed. Pain hit me and I screamed, my body dropped to the ground and it felt like something inside me broke open. My hands duginto the dirt and my back arched. “What… what is this?!” Fire ran through my veins and my bones felt like they were moving. I cried out, and my voice shook. “Stop… please stop…” But it did not stop, it only got worse. My chest tightened and I couldn’t breathe well. Something inside me was waking up, something that had been silent my whole life. My wolf, it moved, it pushed and it roared inside me. “Ahh!” I screamed again, and my fingers gripped the earth. I heard footsteps, they were here, I heard them getting closer. “She’s down!” “Good. Finish it.” I lifted my head slowly and my eyes met theirs. Men I have seen before, men who bowed to me, men who called me Luna. Now they held weapons and pointed them at me. “Please…” My voice shook. “Why are you doing this?” One of them then stepped closer and his face was hard. “Alpha Kael gave the order.” My chest tightened. The Alpha, Him? My mate. No…Not my mate….Not anymore. “Why?” I whispered but one answered me at first and then another one spoke. “Because you should not be alive.” My heart dropped. What did that mean? “I… I did nothing,” I said, and my voice broke. “I stayed. I listened. I never caused trouble…” “Exactly,” he cut in and I froze. “What?” He then looked at me like I was something strange. “She’s not just the debt,” he said to the others and then his eyes returned to me. “She’s the risk.” My breath stopped. Risk? “What risk?” I asked but one answered and they raise me their weapons and my body shook. I tried to stand, but my legs failed me and the pain inside me grew again and it was stronger this time. I then fell back to the ground. “No… no…” My veins burned and my skin felt like it would tear opened and then my wolf roared again. It was loud and strong, not weak and not broken. “You are not what they think you are.” My eyes widened. “What… what do you mean?” But the voice faded and the pain stayed. “Do it now!” one of them shouted and I looked up, this was it, I was going to die, just like that, after everything, after loving Kael, after believing him. I then closed my eyes and tears fell down my face, so this was how my story ended. Then…it stopped and the air changed. I felt it even before I opened my eyes, something was here, something powerful and my eyes opened slowly. The men in front of me steppedback and fear showed on their faces, real fear. “What is this…?” one of them whispered and I turned my head and then I saw him. A man stood not far from me. I didn’t know when he came, I didn’t hear his steps, he was just there, he was tall, still and watching. My heart beat fast, it was not from fear, but something else, something I didn’t understand. The men looked at him like they wanted to run but they couldn’t move. “Who are you?” one of them asked, and his voice shook and then the man did not answer, he just looked at them and then he spoke. “Leave,” he said, that was all, one word, it was simple but it hit hard and the men froze and for a second, no one moved. Then…They turned, they ran, all of them, without looking back. My eyes widened. They just… left? Just like that? Who is he? I tried to sit up, but my body was weak and my head spinned and then the man stepped closer. One step. Two steps an each step made my heart beat faster. I should be afraid, but I was not and that scared me more. He then stopped in front of me, he was close enough and I could see his face now, his eyes, they were on me, not passing over me and not ignoring me, they were just on me. Like he saw something, something important. “Can you stand?” He asked and his voice was low. I then shook my head slowly. “I… I can’t…” He looked at me for a long moment and he spoke again. “So they finally tried to kill you,” the man said and my breath caught Finally? “What do you mean?” I asked and my voice came out weak “You know about this?” I added but he did not answer my question, he just watched me, like he already knew everything and my hands shook. “Who are you?” I asked but there was no answer. “Why did they listen to you?” I pressed but there was still nothing and my chest rose fast. “I don’t understand anything!” I cried out. “They said I am a risk. They said I should not be alive. What does that mean?!” There is we silence and the wind moved around us, but he stayed still and then he moved closer, closer than before and I felt it again. That strange pull, my heart beat harder and my breath got stuck. My wolf… moved, not in pain this time but in response and I froze. What is this feeling? He stopped right in front of me and he bent a little, so we were face to face and my body went still. His eyes held mine and in that moment…Something inside me shook, not fear, but something deeper, like I knew him. But I didn’t and my lips parted, I wanted to speak but no words came out. He then studied my face, slowly and carefully, it was like he was checking something. Then his hand lifted and I flinched but he did not touch me. He just looked and then he spoke. “So they finally tried to kill you,” Alpha Lucien said again and my breath shook again. “You said that already,” I whispered. “What do you mean by finally?” My voice trembled. “Were they always going to kill me?” No one answered and my chest tightened. “Tell me!” I cried. “Please!” He then leaned closer, so close that could feel his breath. My heart stopped and his lips moved. And he whispered… “You survived longer than expected… Princess.”
