CHAPTER 3
The Truth Behind My Marriage
Aria’s POV
“Princess.”
The word stayed in my head and it kept turning and then I blinked at him and for a second… I almost laughed.
“Princess?” I repeated and my voice sounded strange.
“Me?”
I then shook my head. “No… you’re mistaken.”
I tried to push myself up, but my body was weak.
“I’m not a princess,” I said. “I’m no one.”
My lips trembled.
“I was just… someone they took in.”
I then looked down at my hands.
“I don’t even have a wolf.”
There was silence and I looked up at him again, he was still watching me, he was not confused and not unsure, it was like he knew something I didn’t.
“You think this is funny?” I asked but he did not smile, he did not look away.
“No,” he said and that was all, just one word, but it made my chest tight and then I swallowed.
“Then stop saying things that don’t make sense,” I whispered and he stepped back a little and then he spoke again.
“My name is Alpha Lucien,” he said and my breath caught slightly.
“I lead the Shadowfang Pack.”
The words settled in the air but I didn’t react much, everything already felt too heavy.
“Your marriage wasn’t about a debt,” Alpha Lucien said and my breath stopped and then I stared at him.
“What?”
My voice came out low. “You heard me,” he said and I shook my head fast.
“No. That’s not true.”
I then pointed back toward the pack land.
“My father saved Alpha Kael. Everyone knows that.”
My chest rose.
“That was the agreement, a blood oath, he had to repay it.”
I nodded like I was trying to convince myself. “That’s why Alpha Kael married me.”
He watched me and then he said….
“It was a containment.”
Everything inside me went still and I stopped breathing.
Containment?
“What… does that mean?” I asked slowly and my voice shook and then he looked at me.
“Your father didn’t just save Alpha Kael.”
My heart beat faster.
“What are you saying?”
“He hid something,” Alpha Lucien said, his voice wss calm.
“Something dangerous.”
I felt my chest tighten.
“Dangerous?”
My hands then moved into fists.
“My father was not dangerous,” I said.
“He was kind, he helped people. He….”
“He hid something powerful,” he cut in and eyes stayed on mine.
“And that thing… is you.”
My ears rang and everything went quiet.
Me?
I then stared at him and my lips parted, but no sound came out.
“No…” I whispered and I shook my head again.
“No, that’s not possible.”
I let out a small laugh, but it sounded wrong.
“You’re wrong,” I said. “You don’t know me.”
I then pushed myself up again, and I forced my body to sit.
“I grew up in that pack, I was always there.”
My chest rose fast.
“I was the weakest one.”
My voice broke.
“No wolf, no strength, there was nothing.”
I then looked at him.
“You think someone like me is powerful?”
I almost laughed again.
“Look at me.”
He did not move.
“That’s because you were sealed,” Alpha Lucien said and my breath caught and then I froze.
“What…?”
The word barely left my lips.
“Sealed,” he repeated and my heart beat louder.
“Sealed?” I whispered and I shook my head slowly.
“No… no, that doesn’t make sense.”
He then took a step closer.
“To hide your bloodline.”
My body went stiff.
Bloodline?
My fingers dug into the dirt.
“What bloodline?” I asked, my voice was small now, I didn’t like this, I didn’t like any of this.
“I don’t have anything like that,” I said. “My parents were just normal…”
“Your parents were not normal,” Lucien said and my chest tightened again.
“Stop,” I whispered and I shook my head.
“Stop saying things about them.”
But he did not stop.
“Your family was one of the strongest lines to ever exist,” Alpha Lucien said and my breath shook.
“No…”
“They were hunted,” he continued and my eyes were filled with tears.
“No…”
“They were feared.”
“Stop!” I shouted and my voice broke.
“I said stop!”
Silence fell between us and my chest rose fast and then tears ran down my face.
I wiped them, but more came.
“My family…” I whispered. “They died.”
My voice then shook.
“They were killed.”
I looked at him.
“They were attacked. That’s what they said.”
My lips trembled.
“It was an accident, a raid, that’s what everyone said.”
I held his gaze.
“Are you saying that’s not true?”
He did not answer at once and that scared me more.
“Say something,” I whispered.
“Tell me I’m wrong.”
My voice broke .
“Please.”
He then looked straight into my eyes and then he spoke.
“Your family wasn’t killed randomly,” he said and my heart stopped and then everything inside me dropped.
I felt like I couldn’t breathe and my hands shook.
“Then why?” I asked and my voice was barely there.
“Why were they killed?”
The silence before his answer felt long..
Then…he said it.
“Because of me.”
My mind went blank and stared at him and I heard the words but I didn’t understand them.
“What…?” I whispered.
“I don’t… understand…”
He did not look away.
“I led the attack,” Lucien said and my ears rang.
“No…”
The word slipped out, it was small and broken.
“No… that’s not true.”
I shook my head.
“You’re lying.”
My voice rose
“You’re lying!”
My chest hurt.
“My family… they…” I choked.
“They didn’t do anything!”
Tears fell again.
“You’re lying!” I repeated but he did not react.
“I led the m******e,” Alpha Lucien said again, it was clear and firm, like it was nothing, like it did not hurt him, but it hurt me.
It tore something inside me and I pushed myself back, and tried to get away from him, my hands slipped on the ground and my breathing turned fast.
“No… no…”
Everything crashed inside me.
The man I loved, Alpha Kael, tried to kill me.
And now…
The man standing in front of me…the one my body reacted to…The one my wolf listened to…Alpha Lucien was the one who killed my family.
I shook my head again and again.
“This is not real,” I whispered.
“This can’t be real.”
My voice broke
“Why are you telling me this?”
I looked at him through my tears.
“Why now?”
“Why me?”
He then took another step closer, I wanted to move but I couldn’t and my body stayed still.
My heart beat hard.
“You needed to know,” Alpha Lucien said and my hands trembled.
“Know what?” I asked.
“That your life was never yours,” he said and my breath caught.
“That you were hidden for a reason.”
My chest rose.
“That the moment your seal breaks…”
He paused and I stared at him and then my heart rang.
“What happens?” I asked and my voice was shaking again.
“What happens when it breaks?”
He then looked at me, deep and serious, it was what he was about to say matters a lot .
“Then they will come for you again,” Alpha Lucien said and my breath stopped.
“They?”
“The ones who feared your bloodline,” he said and my chest tightened
“And you?” I asked and my voice dropped.
“What about you?”
I held his gaze.
“You killed them.”
My lips trembled.
“So what are you going to do to me?”
There was slence and he stepped closer and I felt that pull again, it was stronger now and my wolf moved inside me.
Not in pain, but in response and it scared me, it confused me and then looked up at him, waiting and my heart was in my throat, then I spoke, it was low but clear.
“And I will do it again…”
My breath stopped, my eyes widened
His next words cut deep.
“…if you become what they fear.”
