CHAPTER 4
The Mate Bond Was a Lie
Aria’s POV
“And I will do it again… if you become what they fear.”
Alpha Lucien’s words hit me again, again, again.
I then shook my head fast.
“No…”
My voice broke
“No, don’t say that.”
I pushed myself back on the ground, and I tried to move away from Alpha Lucien and my hands shook and then my heart beat too fast.
“I don’t want to hear this,” I said and I covered my ears.
“I don’t want to hear anything from you.”
But Alpha Lucien’s voice still reached me.
“You have to.”
“No!” I shouted and tears fell again.
“You killed them!”
My chest hurt.
“My family… they trusted people… they lived their lives… and you…”
My voice failed me and I couldn’t finish it, I couldn’t say it.
Lucien watched me, he was still and calm and that made it worse.
“I hate you,” I whispered and the words came out weak, but they were real.
“I hate you.”
My wolf moved inside me, it was not in anger but in something else, something I don’t want, something I don’t understand.
I then pressed my hand to my chest.
“Stop…” I whispered and my breathing turned uneven.
“Why does it feel like this?”
I looked at Lucien, I was confused, angry and hurt.
“Why do I feel…” I stopped and I couldn’t say it, I didn’t want to say it. Then Alpha Lucien answered for me.
“Because I am your mate.”
My head snapped up.
“No.”
I said it fast without thinking.
“No, you are not.”
I shook my head again.
“I already have a mate.”
My voice was stronger now.
“I was married.”
I held onto that because that was the only thing that still made sense.
“I felt the bond,” I said.
“I know what it feels like.”
I pointed toward the pack land.
“Alpha Kael is my mate.”
Alpha Lucien looked at me and then he said…
“Alpha Kael… is not your mate.”
Everything inside me broke.
“No…”
My lips trembled.
“That’s not true.”
My voice shook.
“That’s not true!”
I then pushed myself up again, even though my body protests.
“You’re lying!” I shouted.
“You’re just saying things to confuse me!”
My chest rose fast.
“Alpha Kael is my mate,” I repeated.
“Alpha Kael has to be.”
I stared at Alpha Lucien.
“Three years… I felt it… I felt the bond.”
My voice softened.
“Alpha Kael stayed with me… Alpha Kael cared…”
My throat tightened. “Alpha Kael…”
I stopped because now…I didn’t know, I didn’t know what was real.
The man in front of me did not move.
“Alpha Kael forced it,” Alpha Lucien said and my breath caught.
“What?”
“He forced the bond,” he repeated and then I blinked and my mind went blank.
“Forced?” I whispered and my voice sounded far away.
“That’s not possible.”
I then shook my head slowly.
“You can’t force a mate bond.”
“That is what they want you to believe,” he said and my chest tightened.
“No…”
My hands shook.
“No, that’s not true…”
“To keep you under control,” he continued and my stomach dropped.
Control?
My lips parted but not sound came out and then my mind started to run fast, too fast, all the memories, all the moments.
The way Alpha Kael looked at me, the way he stayed and the way he cared. Was that real? Or…Was it just… Watching me? Containing me?
My breath broke.
“No…”
Tears fell again.
“I don’t believe you.”
But my voice was weak because something inside me was already breaking.
“Alpha Kael made sure you stayed close,” Lucien said and my chest tightened more.
“Alpha Kael made sure you never left the pack.”
My heart beat louder.
“Alpha Kael made sure your power stayed hidden.”
My hands curled into fists.
“No…”
I shook my head again.
“Alpha Kael protected me,” I said and my voice rose
“Alpha Kael stood up for me!”
I looked at Alpha Lucien.
“Alpha Kael didn’t have to do that!”
“Alpha Kael did,” Lucien said and his voice stayed steady.
“Because if you left…”
He pauses.
I held my breath.
“…they would lose control of you.”
Everything inside me shattered and I took a step back and then another and mylegs felt weak.
“So… all this time…” I whispered and my voice broke.
“I wasn’t loved…”
My chest hurts more.
“I was managed.”
The word tasted bitter in my mouth and I hated but it felt true and I hated that it felt true and then tears fell without stopping now.
“I was just…” I swallowed.
“A thing to watch.”
There was silence and then I felt so small, so lost.
Then..Pain, it was sharp and sudden and then I gasped and my hand flew to my chest.
“Ahh!” It hurt, It hurt so much.
“What… what is this?!”
I fell to my knees and my body shook and then my heart felt like it was being pulled, torn and ripped.
“No… no… stop!”
I pressed my hand harder against my chest, but it didn’t help because the pain grew, stronger and worse.
It was like something inside me was breaking apart and then I screamed.
“What’s happening to me?!”
My voice echoed and I looked up at Lucien, I was panicked.
“Help me!”
My breathing turned fast.
“I can’t… I can’t take this!”
My whole body trembled and my chest burned, it was like something was being pulled out of me. Alpha Lucien stepped closer, his face changed and his eyes darkened.
“They’re done pretending,” Lucien said but I didn’t understand.
“What…?” I cried
“What do you mean?!”
The pain hit again, it was harder and I screamed but It felt like something was snapping inside me.
The bond, the one I felt for three years, the one I believed in, it was breaking, not slow and not gentle.
It was tearing apart, like it was never meant to stay.
“No!” I cried out and tears blurred my vision.
“Stop it!”
I shook my head. “I don’t want this!”
But it didn’t stop, it kept breaking, piece by piece and I felt it leaving me, the connection, the warmth I thought was love, it faded, it disappeared and my chest felt hollow.
“No…”
My voice turned weak.
“Please…”
I didn’t know who I was begging. Alpha Lucien? Alpha Kael? Anyone?
Then…Something else and I froze and then my breathing stopped.
There was something new, something pulling, different, stronger and darker.
My fingers dug into my chest. “What… is this…?”
I whispered and it pulled again, hard, my body reacted, my wolf moved, not in pain but in answer and I gasped.
“No…”
I shook my head.
“No, no, no…”
I then looked up at Alpha Lucien and my eyes were wide.
“What is happening to me?!”
My voice trembled.
“Make it stop!”
But Alpha Lucien did not stop it, he just looked at me, like he expected this, like he knew and that scared me.
Because I felt it again, that pull, it was deep inside my soul, someone was reaching, grabbing and holding on tight, not letting go.
I could feel it clearly now.
Alpha Lucien wasn’t letting me go.
He was claiming me back.
