The full moon night that was meant to be my wedding with Kieran finally came around. But I had already left the Pack and built myself a small stone cottage deep in the forest, with nothing inside that reminded me of him except for the shattered remains of Sean's bone token resting quietly on the shelf. When that night arrived, my heart was utterly calm. I realized that even picturing Kieran and Tina going through their own moon ceremony together no longer stirred the faintest emotion in me. But that moon was unlike any I had ever seen, a rare blood moon that rose slowly to the very center of the sky, its crimson light flooding through the window and washing over me. And then, in the space of a heartbeat, a blazing pain tore through my body as though fire itself was gnawing at my bones.
