Chapter 3: Secrets and Shadows

1000 Words
The next morning, I woke to the sound of rain tapping against my window. The storm outside mirrored the chaos inside me. I hadn’t slept much since the forest encounter. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw his golden eyes, the wolf in the woods, and that mark glowing faintly on my shoulder. And I was terrified. Terrified because I knew my life had just become infinitely more complicated. --- Breakfast was silent. My mother chatted casually about mundane things, blissfully unaware of the danger lurking in her home—or the supernatural war brewing in the world she couldn’t see. I tried to focus on the toast in front of me, but the moment I heard the front door open, the world shifted again. Aiden. He entered with his usual air of controlled chaos, and somehow, everyone in the room could feel it. Even my younger stepbrother, Jason, who was usually glued to his phone, looked up. “I need to talk to you,” he said, his golden eyes flashing as they met mine. I followed him silently to the library. Silence enveloped us, but my heart pounded like a drum. --- Once inside, he closed the door and leaned against the frame. “You’re officially marked now,” he said, gesturing to the faint glow on my shoulder. “This bond… it’s more than a symbol. It connects us. Emotionally. Mentally. Dangerously.” I swallowed. “I don’t even understand this world. And now I’m—your mate? How is this possible?” Aiden stepped closer, the air between us thick with tension. “It doesn’t matter how it’s possible. What matters is that the moment you appeared, the bond began. The council—the Alpha Council—will notice soon, and you’ll be in danger if we’re not careful.” I felt my stomach drop. The Alpha Council. The one I had never heard of, yet they were apparently real, and apparently… terrifying. “And if I refuse?” I asked quietly, though a part of me knew there was no option to refuse. He cupped my cheek gently, his thumb brushing over my skin. “You won’t. Because your life is tied to mine now. And if anyone tries to hurt you… they answer to me.” The weight of his words pressed on me, making my chest tight. --- At school, whispers followed me like shadows. Vanessa Hale was watching, her eyes narrowed, her smile sharp. I knew she had seen the storm in the forest the night before. She knew something was different about me. And she would use it against me. During lunch, she confronted me. “Looks like you’re not just the new girl anymore,” she said sweetly, voice dripping poison. “I hear your little wolf friend has marked you. How cute. Do you even know what you’re getting yourself into?” I stared at her. “You don’t know what you’re talking about.” “Oh, I know plenty,” she hissed. “And you’re going to regret stepping into his world. You have no idea what kind of enemies you’ve just made.” Her words were sharp, but behind them, I detected fear. She knew Aiden’s secret. And if she told anyone… The thought made my skin crawl. --- After school, Aiden met me at the edge of the forest. The storm had cleared, leaving mist and damp leaves. “You’re officially in danger now,” he said, eyes scanning the shadows. “The rogue pack from last night? They’re not the only ones who know. The council will be watching, and Vanessa… she’s already plotting.” I shivered. “I don’t belong in this world.” “Yes, you do,” he replied, his voice firm. “And I won’t let anyone take you from me.” He reached out, gently brushing my wet hair from my face. His hand lingered, and despite the fear, my body responded. A shiver ran down my spine, electric and alarming. “I… I don’t know if I can do this,” I whispered. “You will,” he said, stepping closer. His eyes glowed gold for a heartbeat. “Because you don’t have a choice. You’re mine, Aria. And the moment you accept that… everything changes.” The words hung in the air. I wanted to push him away, to scream that this wasn’t fair. But part of me… wanted to surrender. To give in. Then, suddenly, a howl pierced the air. Not distant. Close. Menacing. Aiden stiffened instantly, his wolf senses alert. “They’re coming,” he growled. “Run.” I wanted to argue. To fight. But instinct screamed. I followed him into the shadows of the forest, my heart hammering, my mind a swirl of fear, attraction, and adrenaline. The rogue wolves appeared, eyes glowing red in the mist. Three of them. Strong. Fast. Hungry. “You shouldn’t have shown up here,” Aiden said, stepping in front of me. His body shifted slightly, fur sprouting along his arms. He was bigger now, more dangerous. Alpha dangerous. One of them lunged. I froze. Aiden caught it mid-air, snapping its neck with terrifying precision. My stomach churned. My legs shook. “You see?” he said softly, turning to me. “You don’t belong on the sidelines. This world doesn’t forgive weakness.” I swallowed hard, my pulse racing. “I… I’ll try.” He smiled. Not soft. Not gentle. Predatory. Possessive. “No,” he corrected. “You won’t just try. You’ll survive. You’ll fight. Because you’re mine. And anyone who threatens you… dies.” --- That night, I couldn’t sleep. The mark on my shoulder glowed faintly, pulsing like it had a heartbeat of its own. I was no longer just a girl in a new house. I was a target. A mate. A threat. And I was in love with the boy who could destroy the world—or protect me from it.
