The next morning, Silvercrest Academy felt… different.
Whispers followed me like shadows. I could feel their eyes on me, burning curiosity and judgment. Vanessa Hale’s triumphant gaze was the worst. She sat at the top of the cafeteria, smirking, surrounded by her usual entourage.
Her blonde hair gleamed under the sunlight, her perfectly arched brows daring me to challenge her. I wanted to ignore her. I wanted to pretend I didn’t notice the scheming in her eyes. But the second I sat down, her voice slithered across the room.
“Looks like someone’s getting too comfortable with their… stepbrother,” she said, loud enough for half the cafeteria to hear.
The laughter that followed was subtle, mocking, but I felt it as sharply as a punch.
I froze.
Aiden didn’t appear immediately. But then he arrived. Not walking, but gliding through the room, his presence making everything else fade. His golden eyes locked on Vanessa, cold and dangerous.
“You’ve got one warning left,” he said, his voice low and smooth, carrying a weight that silenced everyone.
Vanessa’s smirk faltered, but only slightly. “Or what?” she whispered, leaning back in her chair, her fingers tapping lightly against her table like a predator testing another.
Aiden’s jaw tightened. “Or you’ll regret ever speaking my mate’s name in your mouth.”
I shivered. My chest thudded. His protectiveness made my heart race, but it also made me feel… exposed. Vulnerable. Desired.

By the next period, Vanessa’s plan unfolded.
She cornered me in the empty art room, her eyes blazing with calculated fury.
“You think you can just move into his life, into his bed, and steal everything from me?” she hissed.
I swallowed, trying to keep my voice steady. “We’re not… we’re not together like that. He’s not—”
“Not together?” she interrupted, voice rising. “Do you hear yourself? You’ve been all over him! Everyone sees it! Everyone knows!”
Her accusations stung, but more than that—they frightened me. Vanessa wasn’t just jealous. She was dangerous. And I knew she wouldn’t stop until she got what she wanted.
“Leave me alone,” I said firmly, trying to keep control.
“Oh, I will,” she said, leaning closer, “as soon as you leave him alone. Or better yet…” Her lips twisted into a malicious grin. “…until I expose your little secret to the entire school.”
I froze.
“Your… secret?” I asked cautiously.
Vanessa leaned back, smirking. “Oh, sweetie. That glow on your shoulder? That golden mark? Everyone will see soon enough. Maybe you think you’re special, but you’re just… marked. And once everyone knows what you are… no one will ever look at you the same way again.”
---
My blood ran cold.
How could she know about the bond? Only Aiden and I were supposed to know.
A sound of movement behind me made me spin. Aiden. Standing in the doorway, his golden eyes blazing, his body radiating danger.
“You’ve crossed a line,” he growled.
Vanessa froze, caught. Not afraid, not yet—but cautious.
“I haven’t done anything—” she started.
“Your next word…” Aiden’s voice was sharp, controlled, full of raw power, “…and you’ll regret it. I don’t care who’s watching. You won’t touch her. You won’t expose her. You won’t exist in her life, or anywhere near mine.”
Vanessa’s smirk faltered completely. She backed toward the door, and I realized… she wasn’t planning to attack me physically. No, her weapon was manipulation, jealousy, and fear.
Aiden stepped closer to me, and the room seemed to shrink around us. His eyes softened, golden again, warm and protective.
“Are you okay?” he asked quietly.
I nodded, though my pulse was still racing. “I… think so.”
He placed his hand on my shoulder, thumb brushing over the mark. A warmth spread through me, steadying me.
“You have power,” he murmured. “And it’s already starting to awaken. But you’re not ready to control it yet. That’s why I need to protect you.”
I swallowed. “Power?”
He nodded. “You’re not just… human. Not entirely. That bond marked you for more than love, Aria. It marked you for strength. For survival. For something bigger than this school… bigger than anyone can imagine.”
I stared at him, heart pounding. “I… don’t know if I can do this.”
“You don’t have to know yet,” he said, pulling me slightly closer. “You just have to trust me.”
And even though fear gripped me, even though Vanessa’s words lingered like poison in my mind… I did.
Because golden eyes never lied.
Because mates never lied.
Because Aiden Cross wasn’t just my stepbrother. He was mine.
And nothing—not jealousy, not danger, not secrets—would change that.
