Chapter 8: The Girl in the Prophecy

975 Words
The hallway felt too small for the power standing inside it. Three members of the Alpha Council. Silver eyes. Emotionless faces. Ancient authority. Every wolf in the building lowered their head. Except Aiden. He stood tall in front of me. Alpha. Unyielding. “She goes nowhere,” he said calmly. The female council member tilted her head slightly. “And you presume to command us?” Aiden didn’t flinch. “She is under my protection.” The air thickened. I could feel it — dominance pressing against dominance. Then her silver gaze shifted to me. And for the first time… I felt truly seen. Not like prey. Not like mate. Not like human. Like something dangerous. “Step forward,” she ordered. My body reacted before my mind did. I stepped out from behind Aiden. He grabbed my wrist instantly. “Aria. Don’t.” But I did. I don’t know why. Something inside me wasn’t afraid of her. Something inside me… recognized her. The mark on my shoulder began to glow again. Softly at first. Then brighter. The silver-eyed woman inhaled sharply. “It is her,” she whispered. The other two council members exchanged looks. One of them spoke. “The last time that mark appeared… kingdoms fell.” My stomach dropped. Kingdoms? Aiden’s grip tightened. “What does that mean?” I demanded. The woman stepped closer. “You are not merely a mate,” she said. “You are the Moon-Blessed.” Silence swallowed the hallway. I blinked. “The what?” She raised her hand slowly. And silver energy shimmered in her palm. “Long ago,” she continued, “our kind was ruled by a bloodline chosen by the Moon herself. Not wolves. Not humans.” Her eyes locked on mine. “Something in between.” My pulse roared in my ears. “That bloodline vanished centuries ago.” The mark on my shoulder flared brighter. “And now,” she finished softly, “it has returned.” --- The ground beneath me felt unsteady. “That’s impossible,” Aiden snapped. The council member ignored him. “You are the bridge between species,” she said to me. “The balance of power. The one who can unite the packs… or destroy them.” I stared at my hands. Golden sparks flickered faintly across my skin. “I don’t want that,” I whispered. “Power does not ask for permission,” she replied. --- Aiden stepped forward. “You’re not taking her.” This time, his voice wasn’t calm. It was lethal. The silver-eyed woman studied him carefully. “You are young, Alpha.” “I am strong enough.” She almost smiled. “Strong enough to defy the Council?” The temperature dropped. I felt it. If this escalated… It would be war. Because Aiden would fight. And they would not hesitate to kill him. Fear clawed at my chest. “Stop,” I said quickly. Both sides turned toward me. “I’m not going anywhere,” I continued, trying to steady my voice. “But you’re not touching him either.” The council member’s eyes narrowed slightly. “You think you can command us?” The golden energy inside me stirred. No. It didn’t stir. It responded. The lights in the hallway flickered. The air vibrated. “I’m not commanding you,” I said quietly. “I’m warning you.” Silence. Heavy. Dangerous. Then— The silver-eyed woman slowly lowered her hand. Interesting. “You truly are her,” she murmured. --- Aiden moved closer to me, his arm sliding around my waist protectively. Possessively. Mine. “She stays with me,” he said. The council members exchanged a silent conversation with their eyes. Finally, the woman spoke. “She may remain,” she said carefully. “For now.” My lungs filled with air again. “But,” she continued, “she must come before the Council at the next full moon.” My heart stopped. “For what?” “To determine whether you are our salvation…” Her silver eyes darkened. “Or our extinction.” --- The hallway felt colder after they left. The pack members slowly lifted their heads. Whispers began. Not about fear. About something else. Reverence. Hope. Aiden turned to me immediately. His hands framed my face. “Are you okay?” I searched his eyes. This was different now. Not just passion. Not just mate bond. Something deeper. “You knew something was different about me,” I said softly. He hesitated. “From the beginning.” “Why didn’t you tell me?” “Because if the Council knew,” he admitted, voice rough, “they would try to control you.” “And now?” His jaw tightened. “Now they will.” --- The hallway slowly emptied. Leaving just us. The silence felt fragile. “What if they’re right?” I whispered. “What if I bring destruction?” Aiden leaned his forehead against mine. His voice softened. “You don’t destroy.” “You protect.” “How do you know?” “Because I feel you,” he said quietly. “Through the bond. Your heart. Your fear. Your strength.” His thumb brushed over my glowing mark. “And whatever you are… you’re mine.” I swallowed. “That doesn’t scare you?” A slow, dangerous smile touched his lips. “Aria… I was born to rule wolves.” His golden eyes burned. “If the world wants to challenge you…” His voice dropped. “It answers to me.” --- But as he pulled me into his arms— As safety wrapped around me— One thought refused to leave my mind. The last time this power appeared… Kingdoms fell. And I had no idea which side I would stand on.
