Chapter 7: When the Moon Answered Me

878 Words
Something felt wrong the moment I stepped into Silvercrest Academy. The air was too heavy. Too quiet. Even the usual whispers had a strange edge to them — sharp, tense. Aiden noticed it too. His hand brushed mine briefly in the hallway. “Stay close to me today,” he murmured. My stomach tightened. “Why?” “I can smell them.” Cold slid down my spine. “Rogues?” His jaw flexed. “Yes.” --- It happened during third period. The windows shattered. Glass exploded inward. Students screamed. Three figures leapt into the classroom. Not fully wolves. Not fully human. Red eyes glowing. Claws extended. Chaos erupted. Desks overturned. People ran. Teachers froze. One of the rogues locked onto me instantly. “There she is.” My blood turned to ice. Aiden was across the room — too far. He moved fast. But the rogue was faster. It lunged. And something inside me snapped. --- I didn’t think. I didn’t plan. I reacted. The mark on my shoulder burned. Blinding heat shot through my veins. The air around me pulsed. And then— Everything stopped. Not time. But motion. Like the air had turned solid. Golden light exploded outward from my body. The rogue was thrown backward mid-air, slamming into the far wall with a crack that shook the room. Silence. Absolute silence. I was standing in the center of the classroom. Golden energy swirling around me. My eyes— Reflected gold. Not red. Not human. Gold. The other rogues hesitated. Fear flickered in their expressions. “That’s impossible,” one whispered. Aiden reached me then. He stared at me like he was seeing me for the first time. Not fragile. Not human. Not weak. “Aria…” he breathed. I looked at my hands. They were glowing. The energy pulsed with my heartbeat. Alive. Ancient. And furious. The rogue growled and tried to charge again. I didn’t even touch him. I lifted my hand— And the ground beneath him cracked. He dropped, pinned by invisible force. I could feel it. The power. It wasn’t wolf. It wasn’t human. It was something else. Something older. Something royal. --- Then the hallway doors burst open. More wolves. But these ones had golden eyes. Aiden’s pack. They surrounded the rogues instantly. Within seconds, it was over. The red-eyed wolves were dragged away. Broken. Defeated. The classroom looked like a battlefield. Students stared at me in horror. Phones recording. Whispers rising. “She’s not human.” “What is she?” “Did you see her eyes?” My chest tightened. Panic flooded in. The golden energy flickered violently. “I can’t control it,” I whispered. Aiden stepped in front of me. He grabbed my face firmly. “Look at me.” I couldn’t breathe. “It’s too much—” “Aria.” His voice dropped into something commanding. Alpha. Dominant. “Focus on me.” His hands grounded me. His scent. His heartbeat. The bond. “Breathe,” he ordered. I inhaled sharply. The golden light dimmed slightly. “That’s it,” he murmured. “You’re stronger than it. Don’t let it control you.” I closed my eyes. Focused on him. The energy slowly faded. The glow disappeared. When I opened my eyes again— The room was staring. Fear. Awe. Suspicion. And something worse. Reverence. --- Sirens wailed outside. Not police. Pack enforcers. This was no longer a secret. This was war. Aiden turned to face the class. His expression was ice. “If any of you value your lives,” he said calmly, “you forget what you saw.” His golden eyes flashed. Power rolled off him like a tidal wave. Dominance. Submission hit the room instantly. Several students physically lowered their gaze. Even teachers. I stared at him. He wasn’t just popular. He wasn’t just feared. He was Alpha. And everyone felt it. --- He turned back to me. But this time— There was something different in his eyes. Not just love. Not just protection. Recognition. “You’re not just my mate,” he said quietly. My throat felt dry. “Then what am I?” He leaned closer, voice barely above a whisper. “You’re something the Council has been searching for.” My heart skipped. “What does that mean?” Before he could answer— A new presence filled the hallway. Cold. Ancient. Powerful. Every wolf in the building went still. Aiden stiffened. And for the first time— I felt fear from him. “They’re here,” he muttered. “Who?” He didn’t look away from the doorway. “The Alpha Council.” Slow footsteps echoed down the shattered hallway. Measured. Controlled. And when three tall figures stepped into view— Their eyes weren’t red. They weren’t gold. They were silver. And they were locked on me. --- One of them spoke. Female. Cold. “So,” she said slowly, examining me like I was a weapon. “The prophecy is true.” My heart pounded violently. Prophecy? Aiden moved subtly in front of me. Protective. Possessive. Mine. “She’s under my protection,” he said evenly. The silver-eyed woman smiled faintly. “That,” she replied, “is exactly the problem.”
