Bonny’s POV
The elevator rose in silence.
Not normal silence.
The kind that presses against your chest and waits for something terrible.
Floor numbers climbed steadily above the doors.
18.
19.
20.
No one spoke.
Adrian stood beside me with one hand lightly against my back.
Protective.
Controlled.
Dangerously calm.
Vivienne stared straight ahead like she was walking toward a ghost she had spent years pretending was buried.
Naledi still held my hand.
Mara bounced slightly on her heels like violence was cardio.
Vanessa tracked security feeds on her tablet, muttering under her breath.
Then—
The elevator stopped.
A soft chime echoed.
The doors slid open.
And the executive floor looked nothing like I expected.
No luxury offices.
No crowded boardrooms.
No dramatic empire aesthetics.
It looked…
empty.
Minimalist white walls.
Dark flooring.
Glass partitions.
Silent corridors.
Like a medical facility pretending to be corporate.
My skin crawled immediately.
“This place feels wrong,” Mara said.
“Yes,” Vivienne whispered. “Because it was designed to.”
---
We stepped out cautiously.
The elevator doors closed behind us.
A quiet click followed.
Vanessa looked down instantly.
“They locked.”
“Can you reopen them?” Adrian asked.
“Yes.”
Pause.
“Eventually.”
Excellent.
Love that for us.
---
At the end of the corridor stood a single set of black double doors.
No signs.
No labels.
Only the silver “M” symbol engraved into the center.
Naledi’s breathing became uneven beside me.
I squeezed her hand.
“We leave together,” I whispered.
No matter what happened.
No matter what waited inside.
We leave together.
She nodded shakily.
---
Adrian pushed the doors open.
And the past walked out to meet me.
Seth stood near the windows.
Perfect suit.
Perfect posture.
Perfect liar.
Beside him stood Amelia.
Elegant in cream silk.
Beautiful.
Cruel.
Familiar.
And seated at the far end of the room—
An older man with silver hair watched us calmly from a leather chair.
The Administrator.
My stomach tightened immediately.
Not because he looked dangerous.
Because he looked ordinary.
That was always the worst kind.
Seth smiled first.
“Bonny.”
My blood turned to ice.
Not sweetheart.
Not baby.
Not the soft manipulative voice he used during our relationship.
Just Bonny.
Formal.
Like we were strangers discussing contracts.
Adrian stepped slightly in front of me.
Seth noticed.
His smile thinned.
“There he is.”
Adrian’s voice turned lethal.
“You have one chance to explain yourself.”
Seth laughed softly.
“Still dramatic.”
“And you’re still a coward,” I snapped.
His eyes moved to me slowly.
Something flickered there.
Regret maybe.
Too late for it.
Far too late.
---
Amelia crossed her arms.
“You weren’t supposed to find this place.”
“Yet here we are,” Mara replied.
The older man finally stood.
Measured.
Controlled.
Expensive authority wrapped in human skin.
“Mrs. Knight,” he said politely to me.
Every instinct I had screamed.
“I know you?” I asked quietly.
“No,” he replied. “But I’ve known of you for a very long time.”
I hated him instantly.
---
Vivienne stepped forward sharply.
“Who are you.”
The man inclined his head slightly.
“Gabriel Laurent.”
The name hit her hard.
I saw it immediately.
“You know him,” I said.
Her face went cold.
“My mother’s legal advisor.”
Gabriel smiled faintly.
“Among other things.”
Of course.
There were always “other things.”
---
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“You continued her operations.”
Gabriel folded his hands behind his back.
“Operations is such an unpleasant word.”
“So is trafficking,” Mara muttered.
His gaze flicked toward her.
Mild irritation.
Good.
I hoped she became his migraine.
---
I looked at Seth.
“Tell me this isn’t real.”
He held my gaze for a long moment.
Then looked away first.
Coward.
“It’s real,” he said quietly.
Something inside me cracked anyway.
Not because I loved him anymore.
I didn’t.
But because once upon a time I had trusted him with pieces of myself.
And all along—
he had been standing inside the machine that stole me.
---
“Why?” I asked again.
This question followed me everywhere lately.
Seth exhaled slowly.
“You think this started with you.”
“It did for me.”
His face tightened briefly.
Fair.
“You were identified years ago,” he said. “Long before we met.”
My stomach twisted.
“Did you approach me on purpose?”
Silence.
That was answer enough.
I laughed once.
Broken.
Amelia looked uncomfortable for the first time.
Interesting.
---
Adrian moved beside me again.
“You manipulated her.”
Seth’s eyes hardened.
“No.”
“You targeted her.”
“I protected her.”
The room exploded.
“What?” I shouted.
Seth took one step forward.
“When your file resurfaced, other people wanted access.”
“Stop calling me a file!”
The force in my voice echoed off glass walls.
For one second, even Gabriel looked surprised.
Good.
I was done sounding breakable.
---
Seth looked at me carefully now.
“You were never supposed to marry him.”
My pulse jumped.
“What?”
Gabriel spoke calmly.
“Sheila intended a controlled reintroduction.”
Vivienne’s expression twisted with disgust.
“You planned to hand her to Adrian like property?”
“No,” Gabriel replied. “Like compatibility.”
Mara gagged theatrically.
Accurate response.
---
Adrian’s voice became terrifyingly soft.
“You arranged Bonny’s relationship with Seth.”
Gabriel did not deny it.
“We monitored compatibility metrics.”
I stared at them.
“You’re insane.”
“No,” Gabriel replied smoothly. “We are structured.”
Worse.
Much worse.
---
Amelia suddenly spoke.
“It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.”
All eyes turned to her.
She looked at me directly now.
And beneath the cruelty—
fear.
Interesting.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
Her voice shook slightly.
“Seth was only supposed to keep you close until transition approval.”
My blood froze.
“Transition to what?”
Silence.
Then Seth answered quietly.
“To the Knight family.”
The room detonated.
I looked at Adrian.
At the man I accidentally married.
The man I loved.
The man they had intended all along.
And suddenly I understood the real reason Seth left me at the courthouse.
Not guilt.
Not incompatibility.
Not fear of commitment.
Something else.
Something worse.
I turned slowly back to him.
“You didn’t dump me because you stopped loving me.”
Seth closed his eyes briefly.
“No.”
My voice dropped to a whisper.
“You dumped me because I married the wrong billionaire too early.”
