Chapter 6: Mood Swings

2019 Words
August was surprised to see that no body was in the elevator with them and so he asked. "Why aren't others joining us?" "Sir?" Canon replied but then his mind clicked on what August meant. "This is your private elevator. It's meant for you alone and it leads directly to your office on the 50th floor" "Ohh" August nodded awkwardly. He hadn't even thought about how he's going to handle what he was about to face. How was he going to manage such a big company? In fact, he should've thought about this thing properly before agreeing to come here. In his previous life, he was just a small writer that didn't have any working knowledge or how a company is being run. This is just crazy!! Should he just turn back and runaway? What if he goes there and mess things up which he was sure of, What happens when there's a board meetings or meetings with a client or.... With all this thought in mind, August started to sweat profusely as his stomach started to churn uneasily. I really can't do this and I will just have to look for a way to run. After all, he was different from the owner who was already dead. August was so lost that he didn't notice when the elevator got to their destination and the door opened. "We're here, Sir?" Canon's voice that was filled with perplexity brought him back to reality. "Yes?" August looked at the man that was gazing at him strangely. "We're here" Canon repeated.  August widened his eyes as he slowly stepped out of the elevator; the hallway down to the door that led to his office had different beautiful paintings coupled with beautiful and elegant wall paintings. Out of excitement, he practically ran to his office as he wondered how it would look like. August gasped in contentment as he took in the view before him and swallowed hard. "This is beautiful" He squealed excitedly as he ran to the glass window in his office and looked at the wondrous and bubbling city. The scenery was like nothing he'd ever seen before and it made him to forget about his problems momentarily. He could see the flying cars and other flying things. "Sorry to interrupt you sir, but you have a meeting with the board members. Since this is your first time resuming work in a few days, they want to meet you and no how you're doing" Canon informed dutifully. Hearing this damped the happiness that was evident on August face as the brightened dark orbs turned glum instantaneously, while his shoulders dropped. "Can't you just send my greetings to them?" He tried to bargain. "They wouldn't want to listen or take no as an answer, Sir" Canon bowed helplessly. August nodded his head as he tried to will himself into understanding things from his assistant's view. "What time is the meeting exactly?" He asked with a heavy heart. He wanted to know because, if meeting them was inevitable, then he must get himself clued on who was who. But unfortunately, Canon was even sad to say, "In the next thirty minutes" "What?" August yelled while stomping his foot on the floor, startling the now trembling assistant. "Why didn't you inform me earlier? You knew very well that I am yet to get myself acquainted with lots of things" He gritted his teeth in annoyance. With his head bowed, "I was trying to explain it before, Sir. But you weren't interested" Canon mumbled his explanation. August remained quiet as he could actually recall when Canon was trying to inform him about some work related matters but he'd shunned him off, refusing to listen to such topics. Looking at it now, he was actually doing himself, August thought as he cried silently in his heart. He slightly raised his head to look at his assistant who looked as if he was about to pee in his pants and sighed dejectedly. If he was a prince, then shouldn't a prince hold certain amount of authority that exceeds the wants of the board members? Only that in this company, he wasn't acting as a prince at all. August thought some more and with a glint of light in his eyes, he slowly said, "Go tell them to shift the meeting to 3 hours later!" "Yes sir" Canon chanted as a wave of shivers washed over his system. He rush out of the office almost like he was being chased by something. August felt sorry for the poor guy as he watched him runaway in a great speed. He couldn't helped but wonder what was happening with him, he's beginning to change and he didn't know why. Just now he didn't mean for his voice to sound so commanding with so much authority and power but he just couldn't control it. In fact, it was as if another entity that was residing inside of him did that, changing his voice to a thunderous one. He really needs to get out of there before he goes crazy due to strange mood swings. Two hours later. The meeting was shifted just like August had instructed. He used that opportunity to drown himself in lots of paperworks that he didn't even understand one bit. Rather than stay here and ruin the glory of the company that the prince had left behind, wasn't it wise to just get away from it all? After all, the king can handle it perfectly. August exhaled tiredly as he picked another paper and looked at it for a long time before dropping it with yet another heavy deep breath. "I thought you've been taking care of all this, why is there still too much to look at?" He growled at his assistant that was sitting opposite him, irritation patent on his glorious face. August heard how deep and piercing his voice sounded and slapped himself mentally. He peeked at Canon and wondered if he should apologise for the way he's been snapping at him. But a prince isn't supposed to do so right? August was torn between whether to apologise for his sickening behaviors or not when he heard Canon's free of grudge voice. "It's not everything that's meant for me sir and there's little that I could accomplish without your consent. Some require your signature to proceed and that's why the board members want to see you" Canon gulped as he explained. "Can you introduce them to me? Because I can't remember any of them" August's voice changed back to normal. He's voice is nice once again, God I'm really going to die from heart attack. Canon grieved silently. But still, his voice sounded normal with so much enthusiasm as he said, "Yes sir" A screen appeared before them with the pictures of the members. He introduced them to August one after the other. He made sure to tell him the ones that he should avoid so he doesn't he get himself entangled with them and when August asked why? Canon explained. "Mr. Matrix is a sly and manipulative man and he has always been envious of you. So it's better to stay off his part till your recovery. Normally, he wouldn't do anything to you or even if he tried he could never out smart you or harm you in any way because you're more powerful than him. You're the prince of course and the royal family remains at the top in terms of abilities and power. But now that you're partially not alright" Canon paused and studied August's  face. He only continued when he didn't see any reaction from the other's face. "I don't think you can handle him and besides he might want to put problem between you and your father by alerting the public about your amnesia case" August heard this and shivered as he wondered what would happen if that actually happened. As if Canon could read his mind, he explained further. "The prince is always the head of warriors, they are always at the front line fighting the enemy since they're gifted with a special ability that defers from the one the rest of us purposes. So if a word gets out that the prince isn't powerful like he'd always been, the neighboring kingdom might cease the opportunity and attack us. But that isn't the ultimate problem" "Then, what is it?" August asked impatiently.  "The people's minds will be filled with fear and the whole kingdom will turn upside down. If a kingdom is in chaos, their chance of winning a war becomes less" "Why do I feel that without a prince, the kingdom won't survive?" "Because they're our hope and saviour" Canon admitted with a big grin. "That's huge" August commented absentmindedly. "Pardon?" "I mean it's really a big issue, so I will try my best to stay away from this very person you talked about" August assured, insincerely. He averted his gaze before Canon could meet his gaze so he wouldn't detect his lie. He actually felt bad for his assistant even if they're just getting to know each other and shared no bond or whatsoever. Gosh, he feels bad for the whole kingdom too since he doesn't have what it takes in him to be a hero or a great leader. Shifting the future problems to the back of his mind, August tried to avert part of its root. He took his time to learn about those that liked the prince and those that had always seek for his downfall. At least, he could try and avoid the problems as much as he could to avoid complicating things, so that when he finds the chance to leave, nothing would hold him back. August took his time to study the faces and the names of the board members and he's been reciting it in his heart as he was determined to not blow everything up. Canon looked at him and shook his head, The more he looked at his boss, the more he was seeing another person entirely within him which always perked his curious mind up. What exactly is wrong with my boss? He thought inwardly while his eyes remained fixed on August. Granted, his boss previous personality was brutal, murderous and at the same time dangerous. But now, he couldn't even think of what to place his boss recent behavior; it's appears to be both murderous and considerately nice at the same time. They were sitting on a navy blue couch with a brown table at the center with him sitting opposite August. August who was still busy reciting the names of the strangers in his head suddenly raised his head up to catch Canon looking at him unwaveringly, as their eyes locked together August shivered slightly as the atmosphere suddenly tensed up. He wondered why he was being stared that way and coughed. The cough brought Canon back to his senses. "I'm sorry sir" He apologized. As an understanding man, "I know it's really weird to see your scary boss change overnight, but don't worry If I should escape this one, you might have another competent boss that you will feel proud of" August promised. "Huh?" "I believe it's time, let's go" August said before getting up. "Sir, please do not forget this" August looked back to see something like a watch in Canon's hand. He collected it from him and said his thanks. Technology in this world has gone beyond what he used to know back on earth. There's no television, you could travel into a virtual world through your device and communicate with a computer-like watch (terminal) that every citizens must wear on their wrist.. He's was probably removed because he was sick and he was surprised when Canon brought it out from under his pillow. The thought of this also sent more shivers to him because it confirmed the fact that the prince didn't die a natural death. Either someone killed him or, or what? August couldn't say. So he shrugged his shoulders as he entered the large conference room.
