Chapter 8: The Breach at Midnight
A sudden, deafening explosion rocked the Citadel foundation. Dust fell from the vaulted stone ceiling as the alarm bells began to toll across the fortress.
"They're early," Gabriel growled, standing instantly and drawing his broadsword.
The heavy oak door of the archives blew inward in a shower of stone and iron splinters. Through the smoke poured four Blackthorn executioners, clad in spiked armor, led by none other than Jaxon’s primary lieutenant, Commander Thorne.
"The traitor lives!" Thorne shouted, pointing his bloodied blade at Calla. "By order of Leader Jaxon, bring her head!"
Gabriel stepped in front of Calla instantly, his blade sweeping in a lethal arc that shattered the lead assassin's guard. The war room became an arena of ringing steel and flashing sparks. Gabriel fought with terrifying efficiency, a mountain of iron and raw power, driving three of the attackers back toward the corridor.
However, Thorne ducked under Gabriel’s guard, vaulting over the central desk with his daggers bared, lunging directly for Calla.
Calla didn't retreat.
As Thorne lunged, the crimson crest on her shoulder flared with blinding intensity, reacting to the life-or-death threat. The royal bloodline magic—dormant for decades—surged through her veins. She gripped an ancient iron sword resting on a display rack and swung with pure, unyielding force.
The enchanted blade caught Thorne's strike, shattering his dagger into shards. Before he could recover, Calla slammed the pommel of her sword into his temple, sending him crashing onto the cold stone floor, unconscious.
Gabriel finished off the final attacker, turning just in time to see Calla standing over the fallen commander, her blade pointed at his throat, her shoulder glowing like a dying star.
Gabriel looked at her with fierce pride, a dark grin spreading across his scarred face. "Remind me never to cross you in battle, my Queen."
