Chapter 12: Broken Vows

Chapter 12: Broken Vows Below, the main Blackthorn battle line was collapsing. Gabriel fought like a storm god at the center of the field, his broadsword clearing a wide path through Jaxon’s elite guard. Seeing his army crumble, Jaxon abandoned the main line and spurred his horse directly toward the ridge, his face twisted in desperate rage. He dismounted, drawing his silver-etched blade as he stomped through the mud toward Calla. "You brought destruction to my doorstep!" Jaxon roared, his breathing ragged. "You were supposed to be nothing! A quiet girl living in my shadow!" Calla stepped forward, wiping rain and mud from her brow, her blade held low and ready. Gabriel started toward them, but Calla raised a hand, stopping him. "This ends between us, Jaxon," she said coldly. Jaxon lunged, swinging his blade with reckless, fury-driven power. Calla met every strike with calculated grace. The training of House Solis, hidden for years beneath a quiet exterior, flowed naturally through her movements. Steel rang against steel, sending bright sparks into the dark afternoon. Jaxon overextended on a heavy downward strike. Calla sidestepped the blade, drove the hilt of her sword into his ribs, and swept his legs out from under him. Jaxon crashed hard into the mud, his sword spinning away into the grass. Calla stood over him, the point of her blade resting firmly against the hollow of his throat. "I gave you five years of my life, Jaxon," Calla said, her voice steady and absolute over the howling wind. "You threw me away for political gain. Look at your court now." Jaxon looked past her blade to the valley below. His banners were trampled in the mud. Lady Seraphina’s guard had already surrendered, and his army was laying down their weapons. "Yield," Calla commanded. Jaxon stared into her glowing eyes, the weight of his defeat finally crushing his pride. "I... I yield," he choked out. "Yield," Calla commanded. Jaxon stared into her glowing eyes, the weight of his defeat finally crushing his pride. "I... I yield," he choked out.
