Chapter 4: The Flashing Crest

Chapter 4: The Flashing Crest Gabriel moved with terrifying, instantaneous precision. In a single fluid motion, he drew his broadsword from his hip, parrying the first assassin’s strike with a force that sent the blade spinning out of the attacker's hand. However, the third assassin had bypassed Gabriel entirely, sprinting around the large central desk with a concealed short-dagger aimed directly at Calla’s chest to eliminate the scholar who was burning their trade secrets. Instinct, honed by years of surviving in secrecy, took control of Calla’s body. Instead of cowering, she grabbed the heavy brass candleholder from her desk and swung it with all her strength, catching the assassin across the temple. The blow disoriented him, but his falling weight slammed into her, knocking both of them onto the hard stone floor. The jagged edge of his armor tore through her linen tunic, ripping the shoulder strap completely away. Gabriel brought his heavy boot down on the assassin's chest, disarming him instantly before driving his blade down to secure the room. Silence returned as quickly as the chaos had started, thick smoke hanging in the air. Gabriel turned quickly toward Calla, extending a gloved hand to pull her up. "Are you hit—" He froze mid-sentence. Where her tunic had been torn open, the skin across her left shoulder blade was no longer smooth or pale. Without the daily application of the sun-root paste, and activated by the adrenaline surging through her body, her skin was blazing with a brilliant, luminescent crimson crest. It radiated a faint, warm light—an ancient, intricately detailed emblem depicting a crowned sun surrounded by twin blades. The royal crest of the House of Solis. Gabriel dropped to one knee beside her, his dark eyes wide with uncharacteristic shock. He reached out a gloved hand, holding it barely an inch above her glowing skin, feeling the ancient magic radiating from it. "The lost line..." Gabriel whispered, his voice stripped of all its military hardness. "The true crown didn't perish in the siege." Calla quickly pulled her torn collar over her shoulder, her breathing ragged as she backed against the wooden desk. "Now you know. If you turn me over to the high council or sell me back to Jaxon, my execution will clear whatever debt he owes you." Gabriel looked down at the dead assassins on the floor, then up at her face. Slowly, he unclasped his own heavy, fur-lined cloak from his shoulders, stood up, and wrapped it carefully around her shoulders, completely covering her tear and shielding her mark from the guards whose footsteps were now pounding down the stone hallway outside. "I don't bow to the high council, Calla," Gabriel said, his voice turning dark, quiet, and absolutely resolute. "And Jaxon didn't just cast away a companion. He threw away the rightful ruler of this entire continent. He is about to learn the price of his arrogance."
