Breakfast was a scarce affair, and my soul died a little as I finished my tray. They assigned Chance and me to inventory batteries during the work party and hand out refills to those who needed them. We were set up in a hall closet with a table set in front of the doorway. The space was tighter than I'd typically find comfortable, but I didn't mind one bit with Chance there. A few people came by, and we took their old batteries before giving them new ones. It was going well until a portly man came up to our table. "I need four D batteries."
