Darkest Hour

Ela woke to silence. Not ordinary silence. Wrong silence. The kind that made panic rise before thought could catch up. She sat upright instantly, heart pounding, and looked toward the hallway. “Max?” No answer. Cold fear flooded her veins. She threw the blankets aside and rushed down the hall toward the children’s room. Lily slept curled beneath her blankets peacefully. But Max’s bed was empty. Ela stopped breathing. “Max?” Her voice cracked violently now. The apartment door stood slightly open. Rain poured outside. “No… no, no, no—” Her shaking hands grabbed her phone so fast she nearly dropped it. Niko answered on the first ring. “Ela?” “He’s gone.” Silence. Then instantly: “Who?” “Max!” she sobbed. “Niko, he’s gone—” “I’m coming.” The line disconnected. Fifteen minutes later, Niko stormed into the apartment looking terrifying enough to make fear itself step aside. Dark coat soaked from rain. Eyes ice-cold. Violence radiating from him in waves. Ela ran straight into him. “He took him,” she cried against his chest. “Adrian took my baby—” Niko held her tightly while his mind turned deadly calm. “Listen to me,” he said firmly. “I’m bringing him back.” Ela shook uncontrollably. “What if he hurts him?” Something monstrous flickered behind Niko’s eyes. “He won’t.” Because if Adrian touched that child, Niko would kill him. And they both knew it. Marcus arrived twenty minutes later with information Niko had demanded through several terrifying phone calls. “There’s an old warehouse near the docks,” Marcus said grimly. “Adrian owns it through shell companies.” Niko grabbed his car keys immediately. Marcus blocked the doorway. “You can’t seriously be planning to go alone.” “Yes.” “This is kidnapping. Call the police.” Niko looked at him coldly. “You think Adrian fears police?” Marcus hesitated. That was enough answer. Before leaving, Niko turned back toward Ela. She looked shattered standing in the middle of the apartment. Small. Terrified. Destroyed. And suddenly guilt hit him like a knife to the ribs. Because this was his fault too. There were truths he had hidden from her. Dangerous truths. “Ela,” he said quietly. She looked up with tear-filled eyes. Niko’s jaw tightened. “I need you to understand something before I go.” Fear crawled across her face. “What?” “I knew Adrian before I met you.” Silence. Heavy and suffocating. “What do you mean?” Niko looked away briefly. “Years ago, I defended men connected to his organization.” His voice turned rough. “I helped keep dangerous people out of prison. Adrian was one of them.” Ela stared at him in horror. “You knew who he was this entire time?” “I didn’t recognize the connection immediately.” “But eventually you did.” “Yes.” Pain crashed across her expression. “Niko…” “I’m the reason men like him learned they could survive anything,” he admitted bitterly. “I built my career protecting monsters.” The truth hung between them like poison. Ela stepped backward slowly. For the first time since meeting him, she looked at him like she truly understood what he was capable of. And it broke something inside him. “I never wanted you involved in my darkness,” he whispered. “But I already am.” Neither spoke for several painful seconds. Then Ela crossed the room suddenly and grabbed his coat tightly. “Bring my son home.” The desperation in her voice nearly destroyed him. Niko cupped her face carefully, forehead pressing briefly against hers. “I swear to you,” he said quietly, “I will burn every piece of this city down before I fail that boy.” Then he left. The storm outside raged violently as Niko drove through the city at dangerous speed. Every thought inside him narrowed into one brutal truth: Adrian had touched what belonged to him. And now someone was going to die. The warehouse near the docks stood abandoned beneath flickering floodlights. Niko entered without hesitation. Inside smelled like gasoline, rust, and rainwater. Several armed men stepped from the shadows immediately. Niko didn’t slow down. The first man swung. Niko broke his nose instantly. Violence exploded through the warehouse. Years of buried rage finally unleashed itself completely. By the time Adrian appeared from the shadows, two men already lay unconscious on the concrete floor. Adrian smiled coldly. “Still protecting broken women, counselor?” Niko’s fists dripped blood. “Where’s Max?” “Safe.” “If you touched him—” “You love her,” Adrian realized suddenly. The amusement in his voice made something inside Niko snap. Adrian laughed softly. “That’s unfortunate.” Niko crossed the distance between them violently, slamming Adrian against a steel beam hard enough to crack bone. “You mistake love for weakness,” Niko growled. Adrian spit blood onto the floor. “She’ll fear you eventually too.” The words hit harder than fists. Because part of Niko feared they were true. Adrian smiled cruelly through bloodied lips. “You and I aren’t that different.” For one horrifying second, silence filled the warehouse. Because Niko had spent years secretly wondering the same thing. Then a small voice cried out from another room. “Mom?” Max. Niko released Adrian instantly and rushed toward the sound. The little boy sat frightened but unharmed beside a chair in the back room. Relief hit Niko so hard it nearly weakened his knees. Max looked up with trembling eyes. “Niko?” Something inside him cracked completely. He crouched carefully beside the boy. “You okay, buddy?” Max nodded shakily before throwing his small arms around Niko’s neck. And in that moment, Niko realized there was no going back anymore. This woman. These children. They owned every ruined part of him now. Completely.
