CHAPTER 02 Evelyn's POV “Samantha?” I call, my eyes widening the more in utter shock. I am shocked because Samantha and my entire family hadn't been on good terms with my husband. In fact, they hate my husband so much. He was a pauper when I met and married him against my family's will and throughout the year I was with him, they never visited. They are the last people I would ever expect to meet in our house. "Samantha, what are you doing here?" My lips part, and I continue staring at her like everything happening isn't real. "What?!" Samantha stands to her feet and starts sashaying in our direction. "Am I not welcome in my sister's house?" Her voice drips with sarcasm and I inwardly roll my eyes. Since when did we become sisters? "Samantha, what are you doing here, and for how long have you been coming?" glower at her. How long have they been relating in my absence to the extent my husband has to forget his phone at her place? My eyes narrow at her in suspicion, "You obviously didn't come here to see me," I stare at her in mock disbelief, "Don't tell me you suddenly have dealings with a man you once scorned," The room charges with tension and I can feel it linger in everyone's lungs. Logan reaches for my right palm and holds it in a bid to calm me down. "Darling, you need to rest, okay." His eyes shoot Samantha a nervous glance, then revert to me. "Let me attend to Samantha." Despite that I wanted to scream the house down because of Samantha, I listened to my husband, went upstairs, and entered my bedroom since I didn't have any strength left in me. Remembering how my family treated Logan like he was not human because he was a pauper, and how I lost my daughter, I cried my heart out, letting the tears and grief consume me. Two days later, my daughter's wake was conducted. I observed it with a few of my husband's business colleagues but surprisingly, my family invited us for dinner as a way of showing their condolences. When I got their call, I was too shocked to say a word, and I wondered why they would make such a grand gesture when they never wanted me to be part of the family in the past. However, right now, my right hand clings to Logan's as we walk into my parents' mansion. While we are having dinner in silence, the first question my mother asks is, "So, you and your husband are getting a divorce right?" The cutlery drops out of shock, and trembling anger, leaving a short clattering noise on the table. I look behind me, to make sure those brown eyes of hers aren't directed at me. But painfully, they are. Besides, I was the only one who came with a husband. She was addressing me! I scoff, blinking hard. I couldn't believe my parents still had a prejudice against my husband even after five years of marriage. What exactly is his crime? Because he was once poor? "Mum, honestly, I don't know where this idea is coming from," I catch Logan's hand under the table, my touch reassuring, "I am not divorcing my husband, and if humiliating him is the real reason you wanted us here, then, we'll excuse ourselves," The chair creaks as I get up, my eyes thick with emotion as I stared at Logan wondering how bad he must be feeling at this point after making him feel unwanted. "Samantha said you were getting divorced with Logan and as a matter of fact, you both have discussed it!" My mom announces, leaving me with the greatest shock of my life. "What?!" Logan shouts. The exposure seems to stun him too. My anger triples and I direct my gaze at Samantha, harsh and glaring. "Why would you go around spreading fake news?!" "I'm sorry, sister but it's not what you think." Samantha's voice is low, causing me to wonder if I overreacted with her... "I'm pregnant with Logan's baby." The world around me comes to a standstill at that revelation. And for seconds I pray to the heavens this isn't true. There's no way my precious Olivia just died and another woman...I scoff, not just any woman but my sister is pregnant with my husband's child... I clutch hard to the left side of my chest, the side I'm feeling excruciating pain from the heartbreak, and I hear nothing else as tears well up in my eyes. "... I've dated Logan for three years, and we've agreed that he's divorcing you as soon as you return," Samantha feigns confusion, "He didn't tell you?" "I'm so sorry, Evelyn, I shouldn't have discussed this, seeing how you just lost your daughter I'm...just..so...sorry," Samantha looked very pitiable, like she was carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders. Liar! I could see the deception in her eyes, how she expertly masked the scornful grin at the corners of her lips. "Listen, don't you ever mention my daughter with that filthy mouth of yours!" My heart is throbbing with emotions and I can't help but glare at Logan. He caused this by relating with them, and now he was going to fix this. "Is it true?" Logan scoffs. "What should I have done? I'm a man and you don't expect my needs to be unattended for five whole years!" I gasp, my tears rushing down in torrents, "What you should have done?" I ask in disbelief, wondering if he was the same Logan I helped build his career, and went against my family to marry, attacking me, and taking sides with my family. "You would have waited for me, and stuck your thing into your damned pants!"
