Too Close

Elena woke slowly to the soft sound of rain. For a few seconds, she forgot where she was. The warmth of the blanket. The dim golden lighting. The faint scent of lilies lingering through the room. Then slowly— Memory returned. Adrian’s hidden suite. Her heartbeat instantly became uneven. Carefully, Elena pushed herself up slightly against the pillows. The fever had reduced, but her body still felt weak. That was when she noticed him. Adrian sat near the large window, sleeves rolled slightly upward while reviewing business files beneath the soft lamp beside him. Still working. Still awake. Still here. The realization affected Elena strangely. Because nobody stayed for her. Nobody ever had. As if sensing her gaze, Adrian finally looked up. “You’re awake.” His deep voice sounded quieter this morning. Less sharp. Elena nodded softly. “You didn’t go home?” Adrian closed the file calmly. “I had work.” “That doesn’t answer my question.” For one brief second, silence settled between them. Then unexpectedly— “You needed supervision.” The answer sounded cold. Practical. Yet Elena somehow understood what he was trying not to say. Her fingers tightened slightly around the blanket. “You really don’t know how to sound comforting, do you?” Something unreadable flickered briefly across Adrian’s expression. Almost amusement. Almost. “I’m not trying to comfort you.” The lie came too quickly. And somehow— Both of them knew it. --- A while later, Elena stood near the window slowly drinking warm tea while rain continued falling softly outside. She felt better now. Not fully. But enough to stand properly. Adrian remained behind his desk reviewing reports again. Yet the atmosphere inside the suite felt different today. Quieter. More aware. Dangerously intimate. At some point, Elena turned slightly toward the flowers near the window. The white lilies and dark red roses looked beautiful beneath the soft rainlight. “You really kept them.” Adrian’s gray eyes lifted toward her calmly. “Yes.” “Why?” The question escaped softly. Adrian studied her silently for several seconds. Then— “I liked them.” Simple answer. Yet somehow Elena’s heartbeat reacted strangely to it. Because Adrian Stormfield was not a man who surrounded himself with beautiful things unnecessarily. Everything in his life had purpose. Control. Precision. Yet he kept the flowers she chose. That realization lingered heavily between them. Elena slowly looked back toward the rain outside. “You know,” she said quietly, “before Stormfield Corporations… nobody really noticed me.” The words surprised even her. Because she rarely admitted vulnerable things aloud. Behind her, Adrian’s expression darkened slightly. “That’s because they were blind.” Elena turned around softly. And suddenly— The atmosphere shifted. Adrian was already looking directly at her. Too intensely. Too personally. Her heartbeat immediately became uneven. Slowly, Elena tried stepping away from the window. Bad idea. The sudden dizziness returned briefly. Her balance slipped slightly— And Adrian caught her instantly. Again. One strong arm wrapped around her waist firmly while his other hand steadied her shoulder. But this time— He didn’t let go. The room became painfully quiet. Elena could feel the warmth of his hand through the thin fabric of her sweater. Could smell his cologne. Could hear his breathing now. Too close. Far too close. Her fingers instinctively gripped the front of his black shirt lightly to steady herself. And Adrian’s eyes dropped to the movement immediately. Something inside his expression shifted. Dangerously. “Elena.” Her name sounded rougher now. Lower. She slowly looked up. Big mistake. Because Adrian Stormfield was no longer looking at her like a CEO watching an employee. He was looking at her like a man losing control. His gaze moved slowly across her face. Her eyes. Her lips. The loose strands of dark hair resting against her cheek. And suddenly Elena became painfully aware of how close his face was to hers. Her breathing turned uneven instantly. Adrian noticed. Of course he did. His hand against her waist tightened slightly. Not enough to hurt. Just enough to keep her there. And somehow— Neither of them moved away. The rain outside became louder. The tension inside the suite became unbearable. Then slowly— Adrian lifted one hand toward her face. Elena froze completely. His fingers brushed gently against the loose strand of hair near her cheek before tucking it behind her ear carefully. The touch was soft. Almost impossibly soft for a man like him. And that somehow made it more intimate. More dangerous. Elena’s breath caught quietly. Adrian’s thumb lingered briefly against her cheek afterward. Warm. Gentle. Like he was trying to memorize the feeling. Something inside Adrian finally snapped then. Because he wanted more. More closeness. More touch. More of her. And Adrian Stormfield hated wanting things emotionally. Slowly— Almost unconsciously— He leaned closer. Elena’s heartbeat became frantic instantly. Their faces were dangerously near now. Close enough for her to feel his breath. Close enough for Adrian to notice the slight trembling in her hands. Neither of them spoke. Neither of them looked away. And for one terrifying moment— It genuinely felt like he was about to kiss her. Then suddenly— Knock. Knock. The sound shattered the moment instantly. Both of them pulled apart immediately. Elena stepped back first, breathing unevenly. While Adrian turned away sharply, jaw tight with frustration. Interesting. Very interesting. Ethan’s voice came calmly from outside the suite door. “Sir? The board members have arrived.” Silence. Then Adrian closed his eyes briefly before answering coldly— “I’ll be there.” A few seconds later, he finally looked back toward Elena. But now the controlled CEO mask had returned completely. Cold. Sharp. Untouchable. Which somehow hurt more than it should have. Adrian adjusted the sleeves of his black shirt calmly. Then quietly— “You should stop looking at me like that.” Elena blinked softly. “Like what?” For one dangerous second, Adrian simply stared at her. Then his voice lowered. “Like you don’t realize what you’re doing to me.” And before Elena could even process those words properly— Adrian Stormfield walked out of the suite.
