I rush quickly down the hall, making my way to Vern’s room. I tried being patient and was going to tell her after dinner, but I couldn’t wait any longer. I rap on the door twice.
“Come in,” she calls out from the other side of the door.
I open it and take a step inside, making sure to close the door behind me. Vern lies on her stomach on the bed, reading a magazine.
“What are you reading?”
“My horoscope.” She doesn’t look up from her magazine. “It says a secret crush is going to reveal itself.”
“Nice.”
Vern laughs. “If only.” She closes it, tosses it aside. “What’s up?”
“Walk with me?”
I don’t speak a word as we make our way down the hall to the kitchen and out the back door. We follow the cobblestone path towards the garden.
