Chapter 2 You Can't Judge A Book by Its Cover

1360 Words
The centurion card, mentioned in the text messange before, was a black credit card furnished with gold around its edges. It was recognized as the "King of Cards" the world over. A symbol of wealth and power. The cardholders were usually people from the government, billionaires and celebrities, etc. And the card came with top priviledges: withdraw without limit, "Call of Requirement", tickets to every big event around the around... Thus the title, the "King of Cards". Evan Jackson, formerly known as Evan Johnson, came from a wealthy and powerful family, the great Johnsons. He used to be a spendthrift, once taking a gamble and losing $30 billion overnight. He could still remember the words his father said to him that day. "I don't care how much money you lose. Money is not the issue here. What matters is that by losing the gamble, you've disgraced the family. Now, go. Don't make me repeat myself. With the time I spent talking to you, I'd have already earned that amount back." He lost $30 billion dollars in a bet, and all he got was a scolding! If it weren't for a mistake Evan made three years back, he wouldn't have been kicked out of the family in the first place. During the past three years, it was dictated that he shall never contact any memeber of the family, nor shall he spend the family's money. Now, three years later, they had finally lifted the ban on his assets. "Rachel and I've been married for three years. In these three years, she has gone through a lot because of me. It's time I make it up to her." Evan promised himself. He finished washing the dishes, and went to the lounge. His mother-in-law was sitting there watching TV. Helen glanced at Evan, demanding: "Wash some fruit!" Evan washed it and brought it to Helen. "Mrs Scott, Rachel and I are going to the movies tonight, and I need to take off early to pick her up from work. You'll need to cook dinner tonight." Helen growled: "You have the nerve to go to the movies?! You deserve the cruest punishment for being such a lazy b***h!" She threatened: "Three days, I'll give you three days. If you can't find a job in three days, I'll tell Rachel to divorce you. You know she always listens to me." With that, Helen swept the fruit to the floor, and went to her bedroom. What she said was true; family always came first for Rachel. Even though her parents had been nothing but blatantly partial towards Josie, Rachel never complained. But luckily, Rachel admired him and stood by his side from the beginning. Whenever Helen asked her to divorce Evan, her answer had always been no. Only Evan and Rachel knew the reason. That was why Helen often insulted Evan while Rachel was at work. She wanted to bully him into a divorce. Evan cleaned up the mess and headed out. He took a taxi and went to the largest shopping mall in York. He wanted to buy something for Rachel as a surprise for the date tonight. As one of the country's top cities, York was the home of various international luxury brands. However, for Evan, these so-called fancy stuff wasn't in any way superior than their cheap substitutes. As a member of the Johnsons, everything provided for him was of the best quality, among which there were stuff you couldn't buy even if you had money. He went straight into a Petak Philip watch store because he remembered the last time they were here, Rachel had liked a watch very much, but it was a hundred thousand bucks, and they couldn't afford it back then. Rachel worked at a real estate company. She could earn ten thousand a month, or thirty thousand at top. But she saved most of her salaries, instead of spending them on luxuries. The thing was, she wanted to buy a house for Evan and herself, so that they could live alone and Evan wouldn't have to put up with her parents' insults any more. So she could afford the watch, technically, but she didn't want to spend her money on this. Evan didn't miss the craving in her look when she tore her eyes away from it. Standing in front of the counter, Evan said to the saleswoman: "Please take out this watch!" The saleswoman Sophie shot a glance at him. When she noticed the cheap clothes he was wearing, her expression soon turned into one of contempt. "Look mister, our watches are very expensive, nothing you can afford. So yeah, I'm not taking it out." Evan frowned: "Who says I can't afford it?" Sophie sneered: "You know what? I've seen lots of people just like you, with jobs of two thousand a month, can't afford anything fancy, so you think you can barge in here and try the watch on for free, and take a picture and post it on **. And then you'd tell me you don't like it and walk away." Evan burst into laughter. He didn't bother arguing with her; instead, he took out the centurion card and handed it to her. "Well you're wrong. Take this card and put my watch in a box!" Sophie was stunned for a moment, and then said: "Stop acting. I'm not falling for that. Why don't you beat it, you poor wretch!" At this moment, another woman with a "manager" name tag on her clothes came over. She heard their argument from the room inside, and went out to check. Seeing the card Evan took out, her expression suddenly changed. She received a call yesterday, saying that the young master from the Johnson family was back, and was ordered to give him nothing but the most respectful treatment if he ever showed. Evan had the centurion card; he must be the young master of the Johnsons! She bowed her head down: "Mr Johnson, I'm sorry I'm late. I'm Cherry David, the manager of this store. What can I do for you?" Sophie was shocked by her manager's humble manner. She had never seen her acting so humbly, even in front of some millionaires. Evan raised his brow, a bit surprised that she knew his last name. But he quickly brushed the thought away, and said sharply: "I'll take this watch. The password is six zeros." Cherry was secretly excited. Evan must be super rich. So young and with with a centurion card! If she could befriend him, it might open up new opportunities for her career. "Okay sir. What are you doing, Sophie? Go swipe the card!" Sophie hesitated: "Miss Cherry, don't be fooled by him. He's a pauper!" Cherry growled at her: "I said go swipe the card!" Sophie obeyed, confused. Evan mentally shook his head; it hadn't clicked for her, it seemed. Cherry took out the watch and packed it herself. After Sophie returned with the card, Cherry handed it to Evan along with the watch. "Do you need anything else, Mr Johnson?" Evan shook his head: "No that's all!" Evan wanted Rachel to have everything nice, but it was not time yet to risk exposing his family background and thus ruining the peaceful life they were having. Seeing that Evan was leaving, Cherry hurriedly said: "Mr Johnson, can you leave your number? If there is any quality issue with your watch, we'll send someone to fetch it and repair it for you." Evan nodded: "Okay." He wrote down his name and phone number before leaving. Sophie couldn't help asking: "Miss Cherry, why are you being so nice to him? The watch he just bought is the cheapest in our shop. And he doesn't look like he's rich." Cherry glared at Sophie: "You can't judge a book by its cover. This man might be our VIP customer. If he comes again, let me know ASAP." She didn't tell Sophie about the centurion card. She was saving him for herself. Nowadays young girls all wanted to know rich people. If Sophie knew Evan was rich, she might go after him. And Cherry didn't want another rival.
