The sanctuary was a furnace. The air was thick with stone dust and the sharp, burning smell of silver.
"We have to move. Now," Cassian growled, his voice barely audible over the deafening pop and whir of automatic weapons. His massive frame covered Elena, his body shielding her from the falling fragments of stone and glass.
"The exit is blocked by their alpha team," Elena said, her fingers a blur over her handheld terminal as she tapped into the cathedral's structural schematics. "But there is a old drainage conduit directly under the altar. It exits into the river canal three blocks away."
"Then we make a new exit," Cassian promised.
Standing, shedding the last vestiges of elegant corporate politesse, his body transformed in an instant; the sheer, terrorizing power of purebred Alpha was unleashed. His shoulders broadened and tore through his perfectly tailored navy suit jacket. With a guttural roar that vibrated through the stone, Cassian rammed his shoulder into the shattered marble altar, sending it crashing down around them and revealing an iron grate, the entrance to the drainage shaft below.
"Go!" he commanded.
Elena didn't hesitate; she slipped into the opening, six feet into the cool, dank concrete conduit, and Cassian followed a moment later, just as a high-explosive round detonated overhead, the explosion sealing them inside with a landslide of stone and debris.
Twenty tense, freezing minutes later, they emerged from a corroded iron vent and found themselves on a rain-slicked concrete pier, the churning dark river flowing silently beneath. The vast glass and steel skyscrapers of the Upper District clawed at the stormy sky, their bright neon peaks like needles pricking the dark clouds.
Elena leaned against a rusting shipping container, wiping rain and grit from her face. She looked at Cassian as he quietly tore the ragged remnants of his expensive suit jacket from his body, exposing a perfect-fitting slate gray shirt that clung to his muscled torso like a second skin.
"You're bleeding," she noted, her eyes fixing on a dark patch spreading across his shoulder where a sliver of silver had grazed him.
"A mere scratch," Cassian murmured, his gray eyes locking onto hers with a gravity that was chilling. "But Krone's enforcers should not have been there. My whereabouts are completely encrypted by the Prime Alpha's personal security code. No one should have known I was going to that cathedral to get to you."
Elena's analytical brain raced. "Unless Valerius Krone is not working with Isolde. Unless Krone is trailing you? Or perhaps... Perhaps the leak doesn't exist within the board members at all."
Cassian moved toward the edge of the pier, his gaze fixed on the highest tower in the city skyline-the glittering, ultra-luxurious penthouse of Sterling Global Holdings. "We need answers. There is only one location on earth where the actual encryption codes of the vault heist would be stored."
"The Sovereign Archives," Elena whispered, her eyes widening. "Within the central mainframe of Sterling Global. That is a suicide mission. The tower is totally secure. Garrick Sterling has his personal elite guard on every floor."
"Those are my guards, Elena. I trained them," Cassian said, turning back to face her with a deadly smile playing on his lips. "I know the weaknesses in that skyscraper. We'll break into the maintenance grates in the sub-level, retrieve the raw biometric data of the vault opening, and we'll know who-or what-actually cracked that vault."
"And what if the perpetrator was truly one of the Five Wise Wolves?"
"Then we will present it to the entire council before the opening bell of the stock market tomorrow," Cassian declared, his gaze intense, moving in dangerously close. The raw power of their intertwined bloodlines crackled in the storm between them, an uneasy mixture of deep-seated animosity and irresistible attraction. "Are you in, little wolf, or are you going to trust your life to Krone's assassins running alone?"
Elena met his piercing gray gaze, the truth of his conviction undeniable. She extended her hand. "I'm in. But if you cross me when it comes to Sterling, I'll make sure my claws find your throat before the sun rises."
Cassian grasped her hand. The touch was searing hot on her cold skin. "Deal."
Three hours later, the storm reached its zenith.
Through the combination of Cassian's high-level security clearance and Elena's flawless hacking expertise, they had managed to infiltrate the Sterling Global Holdings subterranean levels. They evaded biometric sensors, moving like phantom dancers through glass and steel corridors, finally arriving at their destination: the Master Server Core. The room was a cathedral of computing-a black glass temple housing row upon row of humming, blue-lit servers.
Elena instantly slid into the master console chair, her fingers dancing across the holographic keyboard. "Bypassing secondary firewalls. Accessing central vault security log from vault heist night…Extraction time 02:42 AM."
Cassian stood guard, his sharp eyes sweeping the glass perimeter, his primal senses on high alert. "Hurry, Elena. The system automatically sends a notification to the Prime Alpha's private terminal if the master file is accessed for longer than two minutes."
"Got it," Elena breathed, her eyes reflecting the brilliant blue data. "Isolating the biometric data used for the vault opening. Decoding the genetic profile..."
The holographic bar crawled across the screen: 98%... 99%... 100%.
Elena froze, her breath caught in her throat, her face pale. The face hovering in the blue light, the one explicitly confirmed by the system to be the individual who had opened the vault and stolen the ancient Lex Talionis treaty, belonged to the very last person in the world who could have possibly done it.
Garrick Sterling. The Prime Alpha.
"This... Is impossible," Elena whispered, her voice trembling as she stared at the profile. "The Prime Alpha himself robbed his own vault? He set this entire war in motion to frame my family?"
Before Cassian could respond, the heavy, reinforced steel doors of the server core hissed open behind them.
The room immediately dropped in temperature. The quiet hum of the servers was drowned out by the loud, rhythmic thud of expensive leather soles on polished stone.
Elena and Cassian spun around in unison.
In the doorway, supported by the shoulders of twelve fully armed, black-ops tactical enforcers with their weapon systems aimed, stood Garrick Sterling. The Prime Alpha, impeccable in a crisp, tailored pinstripe suit, sported a cruel, derisive smirk while his eyes pulsed with the raw, dominant brilliance of gold.
"An admirable feat of deductive reasoning, Ms. Thorne," Garrick rumbled. His voice was a deep, resonant bass that vibrated with raw power. "A lamentable display of loyalty, Cassian."
Cassian offered no sign of emotion, but his body stiffened completely and his hand hovered inch by inch toward his side. "Sovereign Sterling. It was you. You were the ones who initiated the breach."
"Naturally," Garrick chuckled softly, stepping further into the room. "The Five Wise Wolves, these so-called guardians of the old ways, have grown weak behind their corporate statutes and futile peace treaties. The wolf race was bred for dominion, not to while away their lives with human accounting in boardroom meetings. A catalyst was required - an unthinkable tragedy to precipitate the full unification of power under my exclusive authority. The utter elimination of the Thorne bloodline, and a subsequent systematic purging of the remaining board members under the veil of national security."
Garrick paused, his gaze fixed on Cassian.
"And such an undertaking necessitates absolute precision. It appears, however, that my premier fixer has outstayed his welcome." Garrick raised his hand, signaling the enforcers to lock on target. "Eliminate the girl. Bring me Vance's head."
"Cassian, look out!" Elena cried.
However, before the enforcers could discharge their weapons, Cassian performed an act of unfathomable genius. Without the slightest shift into his wolf form, he launched his fist, a mass of raw, unbound power, into the master control console behind Elena, initiating a devastating system purge.
"Structural breach protocol engaged," chirped the building's sophisticated AI. "Depressurizing glass wall in three…two…one…"
Cassian threw his immense arms around Elena, pulling her to his chest and turning his back to the cavernous, floor-to-ceiling glass wall overlooking the sprawling city sixty stories beneath them.
He glanced over his shoulder at the Prime Alpha, his eyes blazing a defiant, brilliant amber. "The contract is void, Garrick."
The enormous wall of glass behind them exploded outward in a million glittering shards of light. The full fury of the raging storm slammed into the room, and before a single round could be fired, Cassian and Elena plunged backward into the abyss, hurtling through the stinging rain toward the vast, dark city.
