Shadows That Remember

1100 Words
The message remained on Selene's screen long after the phone stopped vibrating. I know where you are. You should have stayed gone. The words felt heavier than they should have. Not because they were threatening. Because they were familiar. For years, she had lived with the belief that she had escaped. Not entirely. Not perfectly. But enough. Enough to build a different life. Enough to create distance between herself and the people she never wanted to see again. Enough to convince herself that the past was finally behind her. Now that illusion was cracking. Slowly. Dangerously. Selene locked her phone and placed it face down on the table. Then she walked toward the apartment window. Outside, the city continued as if nothing had changed. Cars moved through the streets. People hurried beneath umbrellas. Life went on. It always did. Even when yours was falling apart. A bitter smile touched her lips. The city had no idea how many secrets it carried. And neither did Adrian Vale. Across town, Adrian wasn't sleeping. Again. His penthouse was silent except for the soft ticking of a clock. He sat in the darkness of his living room, staring at the city lights. Normally, he'd be reviewing contracts or preparing for tomorrow's meetings. Instead, his thoughts kept drifting back to Selene Hart. Which annoyed him. He didn't obsess over strangers. He certainly didn't spend hours thinking about women he'd exchanged fewer than ten sentences with. Yet here he was. Awake at two in the morning. Thinking about her. He picked up his phone. Opened the browser. Typed her name. Selene Hart. The search results were surprisingly empty. A few charity events. A few gallery appearances. Nothing substantial. No interviews. No family information. No educational background. Almost nothing. Adrian frowned. That wasn't normal. In today's world, everyone left a trail. Everyone. Yet Selene's trail seemed intentionally erased. The discovery should have discouraged his curiosity. Instead, it intensified it. Who are you? The question lingered in his mind. The following morning, Damian arrived at the office carrying coffee. One look at Adrian told him everything. "You didn't sleep." "I'm fine." "Which means you definitely didn't sleep." Adrian ignored him. Damian sat across from the desk. "So." "So what?" "The woman." Adrian looked up. "What woman?" "The mysterious woman you've been staring at for three days." Adrian's expression remained blank. Damian laughed. "There it is." "What?" "That face you make when you're pretending not to care." "I don't know what you're talking about." "You never ask about people." Damian leaned back. "But suddenly you're interested in someone nobody knows anything about." Adrian returned his attention to the document in front of him. Conversation over. Or so he hoped. Unfortunately, Damian wasn't finished. "Curiosity can be dangerous." "Noted." "I'm serious." "I know." "Good." Damian stood. Then paused. "For what it's worth..." Adrian waited. "People don't hide their past without a reason." The office door closed behind him. Leaving Adrian alone with that thought. Three hours later, Selene arrived at an art gallery downtown. The exhibition opening wasn't for another two days. She preferred working when the building was empty. Silence made concentration easier. At least normally. Today was different. Every unfamiliar face felt suspicious. Every ringing phone sounded louder. Every shadow seemed to carry meaning. You're overreacting. She knew that. Fear had a way of making ordinary things look dangerous. Still... The message bothered her. Because it wasn't random. Someone had found her. The question was who. And how. She moved through the gallery, adjusting displays. Painting. Sculpture. Photography. Order. Structure. Predictability. Things she could control. Unlike the past. A sound interrupted her thoughts. Footsteps. Selene turned. A young employee approached. "Nervous?" She blinked. "What?" "You seem distracted today." "Do I?" "A little." Selene forced a smile. "I'm fine." The employee looked unconvinced. But thankfully dropped the subject. That evening, Adrian attended another business event. Smaller this time. More private. He barely listened to the conversations around him. The deals. The negotiations. The networking. Normally he excelled at this. Tonight his concentration felt fractured. Then he saw her. Again. Selene stood near a balcony overlooking the city. For a moment Adrian genuinely wondered if fate was mocking him. Three encounters in one week. Impossible. Yet there she was. Calm. Composed. Watching the skyline. This time he approached. No hesitation. No second thoughts. Selene noticed him immediately. Her expression revealed nothing. "Mr. Vale." "You know who I am." A faint smile appeared. "Everyone knows who you are." Fair point. He stopped beside her. Neither spoke for several seconds. The city lights stretched endlessly below. Finally Adrian broke the silence. "Do you always avoid answering questions?" "Only when I don't like the answers." Interesting. "And which answer didn't you like?" "The truthful one." Adrian studied her. Most people became uncomfortable under scrutiny. Selene didn't. She simply looked back. Unshaken. As though she had already faced worse. Far worse. For the first time in years, Adrian felt something unusual. Not control. Not certainty. Uncertainty. And strangely... He didn't dislike it. Elsewhere in the city, a black sedan sat parked across from Selene's apartment building. Its engine remained off. Its windows tinted. Invisible. A man inside watched quietly. Patiently. His phone rested in his hand. A photograph filled the screen. Selene. Recent. Taken only days ago. The man's expression never changed. Slowly, he typed a message. I told you I'd find you. He didn't send it. Not yet. There was no rush. After all... The hunt was finally over. And now the real game could begin. Back at the event, Selene suddenly felt a chill. The sensation came without warning. Instinct. The same instinct that had kept her alive more than once. Someone was watching. Not Adrian. Someone else. Somewhere. The feeling disappeared almost immediately. But the damage was done. Fear had returned. And this time it felt closer. Much closer. Forcing herself to remain calm, she turned back toward the balcony. Yet her eyes no longer saw the city. They saw memories. Mistakes. People she had left behind. People she had hoped never to see again. Unfortunately, hope was rarely enough. As the evening ended, Adrian watched Selene leave. Once again she disappeared into the crowd. Once again questions followed her. Questions he couldn't answer. Questions he couldn't ignore. For reasons he couldn't explain, he had the unsettling feeling that meeting Selene Hart was going to change something. Perhaps everything. He simply didn't know how much it would cost. Yet. Who is the man watching Selene's apartment, and what happened in her past that makes her react so strongly to being found?
