Chapter Four

Vanessa’s Pov I stared at my reflection in the giant gilded mirror of the master bedroom, barely recognizing the girl looking back. She wore a stunning, emerald-green silk gown that fit her curves like liquid fire, her dark hair swept up in elegant twists with soft strands framing her face. Ryan had given me this dress last week, whispering that green brought out the fire in my eyes. For one foolish, magical evening, when we danced under the sparkling chandeliers of the city’s most exclusive charity gala, I had let myself forget the cold concrete of our beginning. I had looked up into Ryan’s dark, intense eyes and let myself believe that maybe—just maybe—I wasn't just a debt anymore. A sharp, violent knock on the bedroom door shattered the dream completely. I turned around as the door swung open. Ryan stood there, looking impossibly handsome in his tailored tuxedo, but his face was carved out of absolute stone. He didn't look at me with the soft warmth he had shown me at the gala. Instead, his eyes were cold, distant, and shadowed by a heavy storm he refused to share. "Get out of that dress," Ryan said, his voice hard and flat. My heart skipped a beat, a cold knot forming deep in my stomach. "What? Why? We’re supposed to leave for the anniversary dinner in ten minutes. Is something wrong?" "The dinner is canceled," Ryan replied shortly, stepping past me into the room and running a frustrated hand through his dark hair. "And you are staying here. Do not leave this room tonight." "Stay here?" I repeated, my voice rising as panic began to take hold. "Ryan, what is going on? For the past three months, you’ve taken me out, you’ve treated me like a human being instead of a prisoner, and now suddenly you're locking me away again? Look at me! Tell me what you're hiding!" "I am not hiding anything," he snapped back, his voice dangerous and low. "Just obey me for once, Vanessa. Stay in this house." "No!" I shouted, the fear turning into hot, stinging anger. I grabbed my phone from the vanity table, pulled up the screen, and shoved it right into his face. "Is this what you're hiding? Is this why you're acting like a coward?" Ryan froze. On the bright screen was a digital front-page article from the city’s biggest newspaper, splashed with high-resolution photographs taken earlier that afternoon. There was Ryan, standing side-by-side with a stunning, porcelain-skinned woman named Ella Carter. She wore an expensive white designer suit, her blond hair perfectly styled, clinging to his arm with a sweet, victorious smile. The big bold headline read: BILLIONAIRE DYNASTY UNITES: RYAN BLACKWOOD AND ELLA CARTER ANNOUNCE HIGH-SOCIETY ENGAGEMENT. My hands trembled so badly I thought I might drop the phone. "She looks like she belongs with you, doesn't she?" I whispered, my voice breaking as hot tears finally spilled over my eyelashes. "Rich, powerful, sophisticated. Accepted by your family. And what am I, Ryan? Just a poor girl your mother traded away to pay a gambling debt? A dirty little secret you keep locked away in a dark mansion while you go off to marry a real heiress?" Ryan took a sharp step forward, his dark eyes flashing with a desperate urgency. "Vanessa, listen to me. That engagement was arranged by my father and the board of directors. I never agreed to it. I never wanted Ella—" "Stop lying to me!" I screamed, backing away from him as if his touch would burn me. "You didn't deny it to the press, did you? Your family announced it, and you're just going to go along with it because your precious empire matters more than anything else! You made me fall in love with you, Ryan! You made me think I mattered, and all the time I was just your little diversion until your real bride showed up!" The words hung in the quiet, heavy air between us, echoing off the expensive walls. I had finally said it out loud. I loved him. The monster who had bought me had somehow stolen my heart, and it was destroying me from the inside out. Ryan’s face went completely pale. He reached out, his large hand trembling slightly as he tried to grab my wrist. "Vanessa... I never meant for you to—" "Don't touch me!" I sobbed, pulling my arm away sharply. I wiped the messy tears off my cheeks with the back of my hand. "Our arrangement is over. I paid off my mother's debt with every single hour I spent here, playing your obedient pet. But I am not going to stay here and watch you bring another woman into this house. I am leaving." "You are not going anywhere," Ryan said, his voice turning cold and authoritative again, though I could hear the desperate panic hidden beneath it. "You belong to me, Vanessa. I won't let you walk out into that city alone." "I don't belong to anyone!" I cried, turning my back on him. "Get out of my room." He stood there for a long, agonizing moment, the silence stretching between us like a deep canyon. Then, without another word, he turned on his heel and walked out, the heavy bedroom door clicking shut behind him. The moment the lock turned, sealing me inside, I didn't cry anymore. A cold, fierce determination took over my soul. I knew how this story ended if I stayed. Ella Carter would move in, I would be reduced to a maid hiding in the shadows, and my heart would be shattered into a million pieces every single day. I couldn't survive that. I ripped off the expensive emerald-green dress, tearing the zipper in my haste, and pulled on my old, worn-out jeans and a heavy black hoodie. I grabbed my worn canvas backpack from the bottom of the closet and threw in my few remaining clothes, my passport, and the few saved dollars I had managed to hide. My hands flew across the fabric as I packed everything away. My heart hammered wildly against my ribs. I had to sneak past the front gates, find a bus, and run as far away from Ryan Blackwood as my legs could carry me. I couldn't look back. I had to be strong. I zipped the backpack shut, swung it over one shoulder, and turned toward the door, ready to make my escape into the dark, rainy night. Suddenly, the bedroom door flew wide open with a loud, terrifying crash. I jumped back, my breath catching in my throat as I dropped my bag to the floor. Ryan stood in the doorway, his chest heaving, his tie ripped off and his shirt collar open. His dark eyes burned with a wild, terrifying intensity I had never seen before. He looked at the packed backpack on the floor, and then slowly raised his gaze to meet mine. "Where exactly do you think you’re going?"
