Chapter Fourteen
The drive home had been a present one. But reality came crashing back down onto Kiara the moment they got back to the hotel. They caught the elevator up from the hotel’s underground parking garage and exited on Kiara’s floor. Instantly she spotted Malachi waiting for her by her door. He lent on the wall, arms folded, face drawn and dangerous. Nick placed his hand on the small of her back and walked with her to meet him. The move wasn’t missed. Mal’s ice blue eyes flashed in warning. Kiara felt a shiver of fear run through her and wondered if Nick felt it too. Especially since he seemed to be the focus of Mal’s glare. “Hunter.” The name came out as a growl. An accusation.
“Malachi.” Nick’s voice was calm. He didn’t seem to be phased by Mal’s anger at all. Icey eyes turned to her.
“Where have you been?”
“Out.” She didn’t quiet understand why he was so upset. “We took Nick’s little sister and her friends out for ice-cream.”
“And where are these children now?”
“We dropped them off at their homes.” Nick told him. “Annabelle is staying with her friend today.” Mal's eyes stayed on Kiara. Who had to look down at his shoulder. She still couldn’t bring herself to look him in the eye. She felt like a kid who had been caught sneaking out after curfew.
“How convenient.” Mal said. “Your uncle has been trying to get a hold of you. When we couldn’t find you in the hotel this morning, he decided to come here to look for you.” The words felt like a weight on her shoulders. Kiara only just remembered that her phone was still sitting in her room where she had left it the day before. “He will be arriving shortly.” Mal straightened up from the wall and walked away. “Stay in your room.” She heard Mal say before he was gone. Kiara put her head in her hands.
“He’s going to kill me.” She moaned. She hadn’t been in this much trouble since she had accidently shifted when Sienna had locked her in a storage cupboard when she was eleven. She’d destroyed everything in there. Luckily it was Silver who had found her and let her out. She felt Nick’s hands gently on her shoulders. He placed a kiss on her forehead.
“Let’s just go inside and wait. I’ll explain everything to him.” Kiara looked up at him. How was he so calm? Deciding to trust him, she nodded and let them both into her hotel room. She didn’t even need her key since someone had obviously kicked the door open looking for her. Probably Malachi. The door frame was in splinters where the lock had been torn through it. Kiara went straight into the bedroom to grab her phone from where it had been charging. Seventeen missed calls and twenty-nine texts. Most from Silver and Malachi. Some from Cindy. Even one from Dash to let her know what a b***h she was being by ignoring her phone and freaking everyone out. She didn’t know what to think about that one. She went back into the main space of the room to find Nick making her a cup of tea. “How do you take it?” he asked as she sat down on the sofa.
“Splash of milk, half a sugar.” Nick finished preparing it the way she had asked and brought it too her. He sat down next to her and put an arm around her. He kissed her quickly. Kiara took a deep breath, feeling comfort from Nick’s presence beside her. “I better call Silver.” Kiara was more than a little nervous. No matter how old you get, no one likes getting into trouble with their parent.
The phone rang twice before Silver answered. “Kiara?” She flinched. He sounded furious.
“Hi uncle Silver.” She never called him Uncle Silver. At least not since she was thirteen.
“Where the hell have you been?” He wasn’t yelling. Instead his voice was dark and dangerous. It was the sound of an alpha about to rip someone’s head off.
“I’m afraid that was my fault.” Nick told him, taking the phone from her. “Alpha Blake, my name is Nikolai Hunter. Alpha Marcus Hunter is my father.” There was a growl from the other end of the line. “Your nice Kiara saved my sister’s life yesterday. I wanted to thank her. Kiara accidently left her phone at the hotel. But I promise you, we took good care of her.”
“Oh, I know all about the good care you’re taking of Kiara. And it ends now.” Silver was seriously pissed. A frightened shiver rand down Kiara’s back.
“Actually…” Kiara snatched the phone back from Nick.
“I need a minute okay?” She got up and went into the bedroom. Kiara closed the door before she told Silver what she was about to tell him. “Uncle Silver, there’s something you should know.”
“Go on.” Silver was getting a bad feeling about Kiara’s next words.
“He’s mine. Nick, I mean. My mate, I guess. I don’t know. The bond is still incomplete, but it’s there.”
“Kiara.” His voice had softened a little. “This won’t be easy. Your wolf…”
“He knows.” She interrupted him. “I didn’t tell him, he just found out.”
“How?” Silver growled.
“Not really important right now. But Silver, he accepts me. He accepts my wolf. It doesn’t bother him.”
“Oh it bother’s him.”
“I really don’t think it does. I… I think he might love me.” Silver wanted to argue. The thought of his daughter, adopted or not, mating made him a little uncomfortable. He knew his girls were all adults now, even Kiara should have been granted adult status by now, but he still didn’t like the idea of them growing up and not needing him anymore. Silver also had the advantage of knowing exactly what it was like to find their mate. The one person who would always love them like no one else ever could.
“Be careful.” He said. “You still need to watch out for Marcus Hunter.” She heard him sigh. “Did you really have to mate with his son?” Kiara smiled. Silver was no longer furious with her. Still a little mad. But not furious.“And for god’s sake, keep your phone on you. I was this close to barging into another Alpha’s territory and starting war. I promised your mother I’d keep you safe. Please, just check in and let me know that you’re okay?”
“I promise.”
“Good girl. Well, I better turn around and go home then.”
“Yes. Good idea.”
“I love you Cub.” Silver hung up before she could respond. She loved him too.
“Well?” Nick asked when she came out of the bedroom.
“Crisis averted.”
“Did you tell him? The thing about our mating bond?” She flopped down beside him.
“I did.”
“And?”
“And he told me to be careful of your father.” She turned to look him in the eye. “Your father will kill me if he finds out about my wolf.” Nick tucked a lock of silky black hair behind her ear. His lips kissed hers gently.
“He won’t find out. I promise, I’ll keep you safe.” Kiara snuggled into him.
