The Alpha Who Knows My Name

2122 Words
Lyra couldn't breathe. The words of the mysterious voice were still echoing inside her mind. Do not let him take you. She stared at the Alpha standing at the end of the hallway. The same man who had protected her. The same man whose command had forced the hunters to retreat. The same man every Nightfall warrior obeyed without question. And now the voice was warning her about him. Lyra's fingers tightened around the silver pendant. The Alpha noticed. His eyes dropped to it for a brief moment before returning to hers. “What did you hear?” Lyra froze. He knew. Somehow, he knew. “I didn't hear anything.” His expression didn't change. “You're lying.” Mara stepped closer to Lyra. “She hasn't done anything wrong.” The Alpha looked at Mara. “I didn't say she had.” His voice was calm, but there was something about it that made the entire hallway feel colder. Then another howl shook the fortress. The silver flames along the walls flickered violently. Lyra turned toward the sound. “What is that?” The Alpha's jaw tightened. “Stay here.” “Who is outside?” He didn't answer. Instead, he looked toward one of the warriors standing nearby. “Seal the eastern gates.” The warrior immediately bowed. “Yes, Alpha.” Lyra's heart skipped. Alpha. She had heard the title before. But hearing the warriors speak it with such absolute obedience made something inside her shift. There was only one Alpha who ruled Nightfall. Damon Nightfall. The Moonless Alpha. Lyra looked back at the man. “You're Damon.” The hallway became silent. Mara's eyes widened. The Alpha didn't deny it. “Yes.” One word. That was all. Lyra stared at him. Damon Nightfall. The name carried more weight than any story she had heard about him. The feared Alpha. The cursed Alpha. The man whose territory was avoided by every neighboring pack. And he had just brought her into his fortress. Lyra swallowed. “You knew who I was.” Damon's expression remained unreadable. “Yes.” “How?” He said nothing. Lyra stepped closer. “You knew my name before I told you.” “Yes.” “You knew my mother.” His eyes darkened. “Yes.” “You knew about my power.” “Yes.” Anger began replacing Lyra's fear. “Then stop answering me with one word!” Her voice echoed through the hallway. The warriors exchanged nervous glances. Mara looked at Lyra as if she couldn't believe she had just shouted at the most feared Alpha in the north. But Damon didn't move. He simply watched Lyra. For several seconds, neither spoke. Then he said, “You're asking questions whose answers could get you killed.” Lyra's chest tightened. “I've already been hunted.” “I know.” “People have tried to take my blood.” “I know.” “My mother disappeared.” “I know.” “My mate rejected me.” Something changed in Damon's eyes. Only for a second. But Lyra saw it. “You know about that too.” Damon looked away. “Yes.” Lyra felt something cold settle in her stomach. “How much do you know about me?” Damon turned back. “More than you want me to.” She hated that answer. “Then tell me.” “No.” Lyra's eyes narrowed. “Why?” “Because you aren't ready.” The words hit her like a slap. Again. The same words. Everyone kept telling her she wasn't ready. The voice. The stranger. The hunters. And now Damon. Lyra stepped closer. “I am tired of people deciding what I'm ready for.” Damon's gaze remained fixed on hers. “You think knowledge will make you stronger.” “Won't it?” “No.” His answer was immediate. “Sometimes knowledge makes you easier to destroy.” Lyra didn't know what to say. Damon walked past her. “Come.” She turned. “Where?” “You need to see something.” “I don't trust you.” “I know.” “Then why should I follow you?” “You shouldn't.” Lyra stared at him. Again, that strange honesty. He didn't pretend to be harmless. He didn't ask her to trust him. He simply expected her to make her own choice. Lyra looked at Mara. Mara whispered, “Are you sure?” “No.” But Lyra followed him anyway. They moved deeper into the fortress. The black stone walls seemed older than anything Lyra had ever seen. Silver flames burned inside iron bowls along the corridors. Strange symbols were carved into the walls. Lyra stopped when she saw one. The crescent. The same symbol that had appeared on her skin. Her pendant became warm. Damon noticed. “You recognize it.” Lyra touched the wall. “It is my mark.” “No.” She looked at him. Damon stepped closer. “It is your blood's mark.” Lyra's breathing stopped. “What is the difference?” “A mark can be given.” His eyes lowered toward her collarbone. “A blood mark is inherited.” Lyra's fingers trembled. “My mother had it.” “Yes.” “How do you know?” “I saw it.” “When?” Damon's expression became distant. “Before you were born.” Lyra stared at him. “You knew my mother before I was born?” “Yes.” “What were you to her?” For the first time, Damon looked uncomfortable. Not afraid. Not angry. Something else. Pain. But it disappeared quickly. “That is not a question you should ask me yet.” Lyra almost laughed. “Of course.” She stepped away from him. “Another secret.” Damon watched her. “You think secrets are meant to hurt you.” “Aren't they?” “Not always.” “Then what are they meant to do?” “Protect what cannot survive being known.” Lyra frowned. Before she could respond, a sharp pain struck her chest. She gasped. Her pendant burned against her skin. The hallway disappeared. For a moment, she saw a different place. A woman stood in the darkness. Selene. Her mother. She was holding a baby. Lyra. But this time, Selene wasn't running. She was standing inside this very fortress. Lyra recognized the black stone walls. Selene looked frightened. Someone stood before her. A man. Young. Powerful. Lyra couldn't see his face clearly. But she heard Selene's voice. “You promised me.” The man answered. “I promised to protect her.” Selene shook her head. “From them?” “From everyone.” “Even yourself?” Silence. Then Selene placed the silver pendant around the baby's neck. The vision changed. The man's face became clearer. Dark eyes. Black hair. A younger Damon. Lyra's breath caught. The vision shattered. She stumbled backward. Damon caught her before she fell. His hand closed around her arm. “Lyra.” She looked at him. “You were there.” Damon went still. “With my mother.” He didn't answer. “You were there when I was a baby.” His silence was enough. Lyra pulled her arm away. “You knew me.” Damon's expression hardened. “I knew of you.” “No.” Her voice shook. “You knew me.” Damon looked at her. “Yes.” Lyra's eyes filled with tears, but she refused to let them fall. “Why didn't you find me?” “I couldn't.” “Why?” “Because your mother made sure you could not be found.” “She trusted you.” Damon's jaw tightened. “Yes.” “Then why did she hide me from you?” He looked toward the dark corridor. “Because she knew what would happen if I found you too soon.” “What would happen?” Damon turned back. “You would have become a target.” Lyra stared at him. “I already am.” “Yes.” His voice became quieter. “And now they know exactly where you are.” A cold shiver moved through her. “The hunters?” “No.” Damon's eyes shifted toward the fortress gates. “Someone much worse.” The silver flames suddenly went out. All of them. The fortress fell into darkness. Mara gasped. Lyra felt her wolf stir. Damon immediately moved in front of them. “Stay behind me.” A sound echoed through the corridor. A low scraping noise. Like claws dragging across stone. Lyra's heart began pounding. “What is that?” Damon didn't answer. The warriors rushed toward them. One dropped to his knee. “Alpha.” Damon's eyes had turned silver. “Get Lyra to the inner chamber.” The warrior hesitated. “What about you?” Damon's voice became deadly. “Go.” The warrior immediately obeyed. Lyra grabbed Damon's arm. “No.” His eyes snapped toward her. “You don't understand.” “I understand that something is coming.” “Exactly.” “And you're staying here.” “Yes.” “Then I'm staying too.” Damon stared at her. “You don't know what you're facing.” “Neither do you.” “I know enough.” Another howl shook the fortress. This one was different. It didn't sound like a wolf. It sounded ancient. The mark beneath Lyra's collarbone burned. Damon noticed. His face changed. “Lyra.” “What?” “Show me your mark.” She hesitated. “Why?” “Because if it is glowing…” He stopped. “What?” Damon stepped closer. “If it is glowing, then they have already found you.” Lyra slowly pulled her clothing aside. The black crescent was glowing. Silver light moved through the lines surrounding it. Damon's face went completely still. For the first time since she had met him, Lyra saw genuine fear in his eyes. “You're afraid.” Damon didn't answer. “Damon.” He looked at her. “They shouldn't be able to find you yet.” Lyra's voice dropped. “Who?” Damon's gaze moved toward the darkness. “The ones who were here the night you were born.” Lyra's blood ran cold. “The hunters?” “No.” “Then who?” Damon's expression hardened. “The people who created them.” A cold wind moved through the corridor. Then a voice whispered from somewhere inside the fortress. “Damon.” Every warrior froze. Damon's eyes turned completely silver. Lyra felt her heart stop. The voice came again. “Give us the girl.” Damon stepped forward. “No.” The darkness seemed to tremble. The voice laughed. “You cannot protect her forever.” Damon's fists tightened. “I don't need forever.” He looked back at Lyra. “I only need enough time.” Lyra didn't understand. But something inside her did. Her wolf stirred. Not with fear. With recognition. The same feeling she had experienced when she first saw Damon. Something older than a mate bond. Something she couldn't name. Then the mysterious voice returned inside her mind. Do not trust him. Lyra closed her eyes. But another feeling rose beneath the warning. A feeling she had never experienced before. The voice wasn't afraid of Damon. It was afraid of what Damon knew. Lyra opened her eyes. “Damon.” He looked at her. “You know who stole my fate.” His expression became unreadable. “Yes.” “Who?” He remained silent. Lyra stepped closer. “Tell me.” Damon looked into her eyes. Then he said the words that changed everything. “I know who stole your fate.” Lyra's heart stopped. “And I know why.” Silence. “Why?” Damon's gaze dropped to the pendant around her neck. “Because your fate was never supposed to belong to Kael.” Lyra stopped breathing. Damon continued. “Kael was only the beginning.” The silver pendant suddenly pulsed. Once. Twice. Then a voice whispered inside Lyra's mind. He knows. Lyra looked at Damon. For the first time, she understood the meaning behind the voice's warning. Damon wasn't simply protecting her. He had been waiting for her. And he knew her name long before she ever learned his. Outside the fortress, something enormous roared. The walls shook. Damon turned toward the sound. “It's time.” Lyra swallowed. “Time for what?” Damon looked back at her. “To remember.”
