FIVE You felt hesitant and sceptical about the rationality of what you were about to do, realizing that it was essentially a leap in the dark. Although you were aware of the many advantages you stood to gain, you didn’t know what services you would be obliged to perform in exchange. You passed through an open gate and into a courtyard that resembled a school playground. Above the gate a sign read:“Libyan Fascist Youths”. You had begun to have second thoughts when you saw a group of ten-year-old boys in the middle of the courtyard. They were playing and they wore the shorts and black shirt of the Party faithful. You watched them as they stopped playing to assemble in a row and swear the oath of allegiance to Mussolini. They then sang a chant in Arabic about the glory of the Fascist Party
