Chapter six

Mia tried to push the feeling of jealousy aside, focusing on the conversation at hand. But she couldn't help sneaking glances at the photo of Julian and his ex-fiancée. Julian seemed to sense her unease. "Is everything okay?" he asked, his eyes narrowing slightly. Mia nodded, forcing a smile. "Yeah, everything's fine," she said. Julian's eyes lingered on hers for a moment, as if he didn't quite believe her. But then he nodded and turned his attention back to the conversation. As they talked, Mia found herself feeling more and more uncomfortable. She couldn't shake the feeling that Julian was hiding something from her. And then, just as she was starting to relax, Julian dropped a bombshell. "Mia, I need to tell you something," he said, his voice low and serious. Mia's heart skipped a beat as she wondered what he was going to say. "What is it?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady. Julian hesitated, his eyes locked on hers. "I think my ex-fiancée might be involved in the embezzlement," he said. Mia's eyes widened in surprise. "What?" she exclaimed. Julian nodded. "I know it sounds crazy, but I've been doing some digging and I think I might have found a connection between her and the embezzlement." Mia's mind was racing. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. As they talked, Mia found herself feeling more and more conflicted. Part of her wanted to believe Julian, to trust him completely. But another part of her was screaming warnings, telling her to be careful, to not get too close. As the conversation wore on, Mia realized that she had a decision to make. She could either trust Julian and see where things went, or she could play it safe and keep her distance. But as she looked into Julian's eyes, she knew what she had to do. "Okay," she said, taking a deep breath. "I'll trust you." Julian's face broke out into a wide smile. "Thank you, Mia," he said, his voice filled with relief. As they hugged, Mia felt a sense of excitement wash over her. She was taking a risk, but she knew it was one worth taking. But as they pulled back, Mia saw something that made her heart skip a beat. A look of guilt on Julian's face. And in that moment, Mia wondered if she had made a terrible mistake Mia's eyes narrowed as she searched Julian's face. What was he hiding? But before she could ask any questions, Julian's expression changed. He smiled again, and his eyes crinkled at the corners. "I'm glad we're on the same page, Mia," he said, his voice smooth. "I think we make a great team." Mia's instincts were screaming at her to be careful. Something wasn't right. But she pushed her doubts aside and smiled back at Julian. "I couldn't agree more," she said. As they stood there, smiling at each other, Mia felt a sense of unease. She was playing with fire, and she knew it. But she was determined to see things through. She was going to uncover the truth behind the embezzlement, no matter what it took. "Let's get back to work," Julian said, breaking the silence. "We have a lot to do if we're going to catch the person behind the embezzlement." Mia nodded, her mind racing with possibilities. She was ready to do whatever it took to solve the mystery. As they worked, Mia couldn't shake the feeling that Julian was hiding something from her. She kept catching him looking at her with a strange expression, and she couldn't help but wonder what he was thinking. But every time she tried to confront him, he just smiled and told her she was being paranoid. Mia wasn't so sure. As the day wore on, Mia found herself growing more and more tired. She was exhausted from the lack of sleep, and her mind was reeling from the events of the past few days. "I think I need to take a break," she said, standing up and stretching. Julian nodded, his eyes locked on hers. "You deserve it," he said. "Why don't you go home and get some rest? We can pick up where we left off tomorrow." Mia nodded, feeling a sense of relief wash over her. She was ready to go home and forget about the embezzlement for a while. As she packed up her things and said goodbye to Julian, Mia couldn't shake the feeling that she was being watched. She kept looking over her shoulder, expecting to see someone lurking in the shadows. But every time she looked, there was no one there. Mia sighed, feeling a sense of frustration. She was starting to feel like she was losing her mind. As she walked out of the office building, Mia felt a sense of relief wash over her. She was finally alone, and she could relax. But as she walked down the street, she noticed something strange. A black car was following her, its tinted windows reflecting the sunlight. Mia's heart skipped a beat as she realized she was being followed. She quickened her pace, her eyes fixed on the car. But no matter how fast she walked, the car kept pace with her. Mia was starting to feel like she was in danger. And then, just as she was starting to panic, the car turned off down a side street. Mia was left standing alone, her heart pounding in her chest. She took a deep breath, trying to calm down. She was safe, she told herself. But as she looked around, she realized that she was lost. She had no idea where she was, or how to get back to her apartment. Mia sighed, feeling a sense of frustration. She was tired, she was scared, and she was lost. And then, just as she was starting to feel like things couldn't get any worse, it started to rain.
