Chapter 5

I was done with cooking and the only thing needed was to set up the table. "Baby, are you done?" Mama called out as she descended the stairs. I looked up and smiled, I almost forgot she acts like a child when hungry. "Yes, come to the table." "Mhmmmm, it smells so good." She practically moaned. As we sat down I couldn't ignore the fact that it felt awkward as though something or someone is missing. By the look on her face I know she felt the same. It wasn't always like this. I had fond memories of me her and dad laughing, cracking jokes and talking loudly. But I suppressed those feelings. Trying to break the awkwardness I started a conversation. "So how was your day?" I said whilst dishing for myself. I closely monitored her face. "It was hell but you made it better sweetie." She smiled as she dug into her food. I was about to ask something before her phone rang. One thing about mama she didn't want phones on the table, so I was taken aback when it rung. "Sorry sweetie I need to take this." She smiled ruefully. She got up from the table and went down the passage to dad's study. That was wierd. When we were all in a space together, she usually went to the living room. Seeing that the kitchen and the dining room were a open space. But going to the study was out of the norm. I brushed it off, maybe it's about a patient. I tried to reason with myself and just gave up. I'm overreacting I finally concluded. She's a grown women and is allowed to take her phone calls anywhere anytime. I finally snapped out of it when I heard footsteps trudge down the passage towards the dining room. She smiled at me as she sat down. "So where were we?" The rest of the meal was filled with catching up and laughs. I missed this I thought. Mama finally went up to the room to sleep after dinner. I had to force her because she wanted to do the dishes. But after much reasoning she gave in. I started with clearing the table and then went to wash the dishes. It was about 9pm when I finished everything. I decided to go and watch a movie and then go to sleep. I went upstairs to fetch a blanket and went back down stairs. I made myself comfortable and decided to watch Seriously Single on Netflix. Ayana had been raving about it. Mid movie a knock sounded at the door and I frowned. I checked the time on my watch, 10:53 pm. That's too late for any visitors and mama didn't tell me of anyone who was coming. I tiptoed to the kitchen and grabbed a pan as quietly as possible. I then carried on towards the door I looked through the peephole and it was dark. "Who is it?" I was met with silence. "You better tell me who you are or I'm going to call the cops." I heard a chuckle from the other side of the door. "You always watched to many movies Vee." I was taken aback only one person ever called me Vee. It can't be.
