Yates whipped off his hat as he joined them in the parlor. “My men are waiting in the carriage to take the prisoner to the East Hampton jail for tonight. We’ll be transporting him to Riverhead in the morning. What’s left of that cider flask is headed there, too, for examination. Lady Dunwick, have I your permission to search Mr. Reese’s room before I leave?”
Lady Dunwick sighed. “Of course.”
Yates nodded and turned to Concordia. “I want to take your statement, ma’am—along with your husband’s, if he’s up to it. Captain Decker already told us what he saw before our arrival on the scene, so you don’t have to repeat that part.”
Lady Dunwick indicated a chair. “Please sit down, deputy.”
“Thank you, my lady.” He pulled his notepad and pencil from his vest as he seated himself.
