Asher's eyes were fixed on his phone, waiting for Ember to pick up. He had a feeling that she was avoiding him, and he was determined to get to the bottom of things.
Just as he was starting to get impatient, Ember's voice came on the line. "Asher, I'm sorry I didn't call you back earlier," she said, her voice hesitant.
Asher's eyes narrowed. "What's going on, Ember?" he demanded. "I know about Ethan's trouble with the Morano crime family."
There was a pause on the other end of the line before Ember spoke up. "How did you find out?" she asked, her voice trembling.
Asher's eyes flashed with anger. "That's not the point," he said. "The point is that you've been lying to me."
Ember's voice was defensive. "I was just trying to protect my brother," she said.
Asher's eyes narrowed. "By lying to me?" he demanded.
Ember's voice was hesitant. "I didn't mean to hurt you, Asher."
Asher's eyes flashed with anger. "You didn't mean to hurt me?" he repeated. "You've been using me to help your brother."
Ember's voice was desperate. "Asher, please listen to me."
But Asher was beyond reason. He was furious, and he needed to confront Ember in person.
"I'll meet you at your apartment in 20 minutes," Asher said, his voice cold.
Ember's voice was hesitant. "Asher, I don't think that's a good idea."
But Asher had already hung up the phone. He was determined to get to the bottom of things, no matter what it took.
As he arrived at Ember's apartment, Asher could feel his anger boiling over. He knocked on the door, his heart racing with anticipation.
When Ember opened the door, Asher's eyes locked onto hers. "We need to talk," he said, his voice cold.
Ember's eyes were hesitant, but she stepped aside to let Asher in.
As they stood in the living room, Asher's eyes scanned Ember's face. He was searching for any sign of deception, any hint that she was still lying to him.
But all he saw was fear.
