THE TRUTH

455 Words
Asher's eyes locked onto Lena's, his mind racing with possibilities. What truth could Lena possibly know about Ember? "What are you talking about?" Asher demanded, his voice low and urgent. Lena's smile grew wider. "Ember isn't who you think she is," she said, her voice dripping with malice. "She's been hiding secrets from you, Asher." Asher's eyes narrowed. "What secrets?" he demanded. Lena leaned in close, her voice barely above a whisper. "Ember's brother, Ethan, is in deep trouble. He owes some very bad people a lot of money, and they're not happy about it." Asher's mind reeled as he processed the information. This was what Ember had been hiding from him? "Why are you telling me this?" Asher asked, his eyes locked onto Lena's. Lena's smile grew wider. "Because I want you to know the truth about Ember. She's not the innocent little artist you think she is." Asher's eyes narrowed. "What do you want from me, Lena?" he demanded. Lena's eyes sparkled with amusement. "Oh, I just want you to be careful around Ember. She's not what she seems." As Lena walked away, Asher was left feeling stunned and confused. What was he supposed to make of this new information? He looked around the room, searching for Ember. He needed to talk to her, to find out the truth. But as he scanned the crowds, Asher realized that Ember was nowhere to be found. He pulled out his phone and dialed Ember's number, but it went straight to voicemail. "Ember, where are you?" Asher said, his voice low and urgent. "We need to talk." As he waited for Ember to call him back, Asher couldn't shake off the feeling that something was off. He decided to do some digging on his own, to find out more about Ember's brother and the trouble he was in. Asher pulled out his phone and dialed a number, his eyes scanning the room as he waited for the person to pick up. "Hey, Marcus," Asher said, his voice low. "I need you to look into something for me." Marcus's voice was smooth on the other end of the line. "What do you need me to look into, Asher?" Asher's eyes narrowed. "I need you to find out everything you can about Ember Wellesley's brother, Ethan." There was a pause on the other end of the line before Marcus spoke up. "Asher, I don't know if that's a good idea." Asher's eyes flashed with anger. "Just do it, Marcus." As he waited for Marcus to get back to him, Asher couldn't shake off the feeling that he was getting in over his head. But he was determined to uncover the truth about Ember, no matter what it took.
